What was your first ever car?

A 1964 Austin A40 Mk II.
Bought it for £110 from mate at work.
Pretty fast car for its day ..... Far too fast for the brakes that it was equipped with.

Sold it after 3 years to neighbour for £65.
Bought it back 4 years later for £65 ... Broke it for spares and got more than my original £110 back.

I suppose you could say I started as I meant to carry on.

First bus

1977 Chrysler Alpine S in [almost] white and rust.
It had the 1442cc OHV engine which sounded like a can of spanners being shaken around.
The engine, even though quite powerful for its time, was rather tired - I changed the big end bearing shells in a campsite near Bideford, North Devon whilst on holiday.
Sold it not long after.

YAM 637K--VW beetle 1972 1300
hand painted in green hammerite!! lol

engine out in minutes!
a car that anyone could work on and at very little cost.....
how things have changed.

We had Chrysler/Talbot Alpines and Solaras (the saloon version) as pool cars in the late 70s / early 80s. Pretty hideous, I had the gearlever come off one as I was driving along! And had a brand new Solara stop dead in the outside lane of the M1 - now that was scary

We also had a single Avenger, which was a much nicer car. I always tried to get that if I could!

i had in 1977 a 1966 Mini 850 van with the side windows. it was tuned up wth a head skim and a bigger carb. It was a bit if a shed but was a loy of fun. i also put in corbeau bucket seats and also added a free flow air filter. A patch of black ice in november 1977 did for it and nearly me. Fortunately i was not speeding so i did no go through the railings and into the river in Bristol. Still got a few stitches in my face from the windscreen shattering.

E Reg Ford Orion Ghia 1.6i. Sourced by my dad in 1994, who forgot to check that it had a reverse gear on the test drive. Luckily I wrote it off within a week.

My first car didn't have reverse either. Luckily it was a Triumph Vitesse which had an incredible turning circle (ask anyone who's ever driven one or a Herald), and also I lived in (hilly) Bristol at the time which gave plenty of opportunities for reversing using gravity!
