As per the title, I've been wondering what wheels to put on my SL as the current Albali ones I'm not at all keen on.

I'm thinking I might stick to keeping to 17", partly so I can use my existing tyres and partly because going up a size will probably mean I have to lower the car to fill the arches and I'm not too keen on that as the front bumper is low enough already and lowering it further will mean I couldnt park nose in to the kerb.

I want get something that would have been an option forr the car too rather than anything.

Looking at the alloy wheels direct pages, it seems there are a number of possibilities but I need help deciding.

I guess theres a choice here between AMG I's, II's, III's, or even IV's.

Seen a few late SL's with these.

Ideas anyone?

Maybe Aka$h will turn up something suitable?

OZ AMGs all day long.Make sure you go for 8.5 front and 10j rears and aslo,i would color code the centres

Without the bodykit, those would look silly.

I think the six pointed star ones (the last of the small photos) suit the SL well, and are quite elegant.

The AMG wheels on BTB500's SL look good.

The problem with many R129's I see including the one in the above picture is that the front arches are so high compared to the back. It seems to be by design but I think the bigger the wheel size the worse it'll look.

The split rims look great on cars without body kit too.. I have had one or two in the dim past. They look great.. but a set is well over £1000 plus tyres.

My second favourite is the AMG like in your second pic.. a staggered set up looks the best on a R129.

The late R129 had the option of either the Albali ones or the Sador. I prefer the look of the Sador, so thats an option:

In my opinion the 3 Piece split rims look good on an early SL, not so much on the later ones. The later AMG wheels are the 2 piece split rims, however these are no longer available with the 10" wide rear wheels. ( I do have a staggered refurbished set)

If you decide to go for the AMG I's II's or III's, remember on the 17" sets the front wheels are 7.5" which is narrower than the ones you currently have 8". If its this design you like it needs to be the 18" II, in either the 8" all round or the staggered 8"+9" sets.

You also have the wheels used on all the final editions and the silver arrow. The 2 piece 18" Albireo wheels.

Ive got all of the above in stock, and a some others. If there is anything in perticular you like, let me know.

I would go for the bottom ones which are Evo II,s I believe they were fitted to the Mille Miglia/Special edition ?? that first came out in 1995??

Some good images here of the wheels on the cars my favorites:- click on thumbnails for bigger pics.

Mercedes-Benz R129 SL-Club e.V. | Sondermodelle

1995: “SL-Special Edition” – 630 Fahrzeuge

2000: “Formula One Edition USA” – 20 Fahrzeuge

and

2000: “Mille Miglia” – 12 Fahrzeuge

Ditto the above for the Evo 11s. Easy clean as well.

1998: “designo MB Japan” – 67 Fahrzeuge

They are my all time favorite alloys, but the SL can take wider alloys as Bill has said ^ :)

I had SADOR on mine.

I would also buy them again for my next SL - love the balance between simplicity and a some 'curves' which is what the 1999 SL is as compared to the more linear shape of the early SL's

Sador for me too :)

Ditto. I have Sador and they are very nice, but am looking to go to 18" AMG Style IIIs.

Not sure if it'll make the SL look like a space hopper though :o

Around 3 months too late but did you change the wheels? I am looking for a set of Albalis to replace my 18" AMG replicas.

Not, not changed over yet, I've had a few other expenses come up that have taken priority.

I suspect it'll be the wrong side of christmas now before I have any spare cash to wave at Akash.
