With my friend we lightened and balanced it, did some very rudimentary polishing and porting etc. It was great fun and quite difficult to drive really. Accelerating out of a bend or off a roundabout would see the turbo kick in suddenly and it would understeer terribly! It was a handful in the wet.I never did have a go in one but the MG Maestro Turbos were said to be savagely fast in a straight line.

When I was at college (I must’ve been 18 or 19) a lad in my class got given a brand new MG Metro Turbo on a C plate whilst his dad had a new MG Maestro Turbo. Bought at the same time so they had consecutive plates in a lovely blue colour. (Moonraker Blue?)0-60 in 6.7s.
Wild at the time I guess.

Yeah, mine was an auto - notable for being slower and more juicy! In Autocar's dreams. This was the 3500S "back in the day. 0-60 in under 10 seconds, mpg 23mpg.
Two grand. That was a year's pre-tax salary for me as an undergraduate, even though I was on generous expenses.
So two Dauphines it had to be. Both cost £100.

We look back at one of our favourite saloons of 1971www.autocar.co.uk
First car I can remember lusting after was an MGC GT in JPS colours (black with gold pinstriping) A friend had one and ended up wrapping it around a tree in the wet - I understand handling was not one of it's features!
