What you *thought* your first car might be

For those wondering, this was my first car

Although not my first car, we're Nova SR buddies...

I never did have a go in one but the MG Maestro Turbos were said to be savagely fast in a straight line.
With my friend we lightened and balanced it, did some very rudimentary polishing and porting etc. It was great fun and quite difficult to drive really. Accelerating out of a bend or off a roundabout would see the turbo kick in suddenly and it would understeer terribly! It was a handful in the wet.

TBH at 16, I was more than happy with my Norton 350 bike, so I wasn’t really looking for a car. However, when I passed my car test, it coincided with my sister’s car failing its MoT test, so she gave it to me. I repaired it, so in 1964, my first car was the same as this…

0-60 in 6.7s.

Wild at the time I guess.
When I was at college (I must’ve been 18 or 19) a lad in my class got given a brand new MG Metro Turbo on a C plate whilst his dad had a new MG Maestro Turbo. Bought at the same time so they had consecutive plates in a lovely blue colour. (Moonraker Blue?)

I always wanted a Mini Cooper for my first car. I actually ended up with a Golf GTI Campaign in Dolphin Grey with Pirelli wheels.

Convertible too 👍🏻

What I really wanted was something grown up like my neighbour's P6 3500. (An R&D manager at IBM)

But what I actually drove for four years, and 40,000 miles, as a student was two of these:

I never did get to own my own 22mpg 3.5 P6

The year I turned 17, my grandmother bought a W202 C250TD and there were plans for me to take her outgoing car, an E34 520i. Insurance put paid to that one. 😖

First car I can remember lusting after was an MGC GT in JPS colours (black with gold pinstriping) A friend had one and ended up wrapping it around a tree in the wet - I understand handling was not one of it's features!

22mpg - in your dreams...

Renault Dauphine...Aaargh...

In Autocar's dreams. This was the 3500S "back in the day. 0-60 in under 10 seconds, mpg 23mpg.

Two grand for a car. That was a year's pre-tax salary for me as an undergraduate, even though I was on generous expenses on top.

So two Dauphines it had to be. Both cost £100. Did the job, and left me with enough money to buy a flat on graduation.

Yeah, mine was an auto - notable for being slower and more juicy!

JPS Colours ! That brings back memories. A fellow student had a new Lotus Europa in JPS black.

His dad owned some kind of electrical shop in Ealing. Chap by the name of Curry.

Not entirely practical but the girls seemed to like it.
