Whats the best 2 seater under £5k

Porsche 944S2 cab - OK, older than your brief, but normally an enthusiasts car so well maintained. Prone to sills rusting, so needs that checking. Officially it's a 2+2, but the back seats are vestigial and not useable if you have a wind deflector - which we found essential in our 968 cabriolet.

MX5 is the obvious choice, especially the Eunos Japanese import as these can be had with options not available to the UK market - like auto and aircon! I looked at one some years ago, while I had a 944S or 968 coupe (can't remember which) but decided to spend a bit more, eventually got the 968 cab.

A Toyota MR2 is well within budget and fits the brief.

Are there any MR2 on 53 plate or later? I thought they wrapped up about 2001 ????

A Honda S2000 is a proper petrolhead car for that budget! :thumb:
I'd rather have a older S2000 than a Audi TT or a Z4 .

when u deploy wind deflector it will be 2 seater

It's all about weight and weight distribution so it has to be a two seater no point carrying the weight of seats you will never use

Is it going to be raced?

SLK for me, but I am biased. You can get a very good 230SLK for well under 5 grand.

Agreed, great little cars. I had a lot of fun with my SLK 230. Never had any trouble with it either. Could probably stretch to a 320 for that budget which would be an even better buy...those V6s were fantastic. Get one with the AMG sports package and you are sorted.

I had a 2002 MR2 for 3 years from new, it was a fine little car, it had the sequential gearbox, it was fairly good on upshifts but a little slow on downshifts.

The only problem I had with it was with the wheels, they are powder coated on the outer face and painted on the inner, where the transition was they corroded like mad, had them replaced under warranty once, the second owner had them replaced again under warranty and then she paid for them to be re-finished after the anti corrosion warranty was out.

It was really cheap to run, cheap servicing, bullet proof (Lotus use the engine in the Elise) and a little more exclusive than an MX5.

One of my mates commutes into the city everyday in a 1.8T TT that he picked up for £1500 - he is well pleased and has had minimal issues. It's not the most rapid of transport but very well built if that's something you are interested in!

They all sound very dreary apart from the MX-5 and the Z4. I wouldn't want to commute 80 miles in an MX-5 so the Z4 has it

I've driven a relatively recently 3.0 Z4 and it's quite a piece of kit. Turn-in is super-sharp and the engine is smooth & revvy. You sit quite low which adds to the sense of excitement. It rides a little hard but then all modern cars seem to

Mx5 great handling car out handle most things on the twisty bits, not so quick at straight line speed

Another vote here for the MX5 out of that list, preferably with a hardtop. Massive following, great parts & accessories supply, far more reliable imo than any of the other contenders and without doubt value for money.

Personally, I'd be looking a scoring a very good 944/944S.

I'd go just a little bit older and look at a R129 ; there are lots available in that price range , many are dogs , but with care you could pick a good car .

Same problems as Porsche too old and not a two seater, there's some nice stuff in the classics but he's not willing to go back that far
