Hi, today i was driving to leicester in my c180, i was nearly there when i heard a loud clunk, and the car jerked, i wandered what is was and became curious and slowed down, after about halve a mile i noticed that the abs light was on... being worried i pulled up at the next posible location whitch was near the traffic lights..... as i began to pull off the car just didnt want to move it took it over 10 seconds before it even hit 20mph.... now i was really getting worried... thinking that the light might turn off if i switch off the engine was daft i know.... as i started the enging again the car pulled off again as norman but a big clunk again as i put it into the D position.... then after 20mph the car didnt want to change gear in fact it was hitting over 5000 revs and still didnt change gear..... now i was really scared i pulled up on a small road and called the RAC to come and see what was wrong.... they sed it could be the torque converter and sed it would be very pricey to fix.... also he took it round the block to check if he notised anything else, infact a really loud whining noise was coming as you took your foot off the accelerator.... the car is still under its 6month warenty from where i brought it from but only pays out £300 if it is pricey that wont even pay halve... the RAC geeza says might cost over a grand to fix......

I need my car back... and its just sitting out side waiting to be fixed... what shal i do please need urgent help :'(

The torque converter is a major part of the automatic gearbox. It does sound like this could be an exbenzive repair :( Not what you want to hear I know. Whereabouts are you based? There are a couple of independent MB specialists who maybe more sympathetic to your wallet than a dealership would be.

*EDIT* just seen you are in the west midlands. Try a search on this forum (or MBOA) for Andy Gayle, he's an MB independent based in Birmingham.

I am no auto gearbox specialist but having recently replaced an auto gearbox in a Rolls Royce, I would not think it was your torque converter and they are not an expensive item on their own. There is nothing in the torque converter to go clunk, it is just like a big liquid turbo if that make any sense.

It sounds more likely to be the gearbox, differential or driveshaft. I cant think why the ABS light would come on, the ABS sensors are on the back of each wheel/driveshaft?

Without seeing it, it is hard to think what it could be. Get somebody to have a look and let us know.

There is an ABS sensor on the read dif. May just be worth checking the oil in it to see if it is ok?

hey i was at work today but my brother looking after all the cars took it to the Mercdes dealership in solihull, turns out its sum sort of sensor, they hooked up car to some computer gizmo and got a report and prited it off, dont understand a word of it to be honest... apperntly will cost around the reigon on £260 but will cost a lot more if the need to take out the diff or summit... my bro knows more about it.... i will ask him and tell you what i meant.... anyway my car should be ready by monday :bannana:

just be glad its not your gearbox! cos thats what mine sounded like when it went!

If it were your abs sensor on the diff, this would not stop it from changing out of 2nd gear.
It will only prevent your ABS working, it will not even go into 'limp home' mode from a fault caused by ABS.

I cannot think of any other sensors on the rear suspension, unless you have ESP.

Jimmy, torque convertors vary from £200 upwards from MB... but i have only ever sold a handful...they never go wrong!!!

Car Fixed :)

hey guys my car is now fixed, apparently they had to drill out sensor on back axle, and the car apparently was in safe mode so i cudint drive it :s!!!

TOTAL COST £215, the warenty people were kind enough to pay out halve the amount even though they only cover the engine and gear box in the warenty.

so total cost for me was just over a tonne!!!
