On the subject of this little cap thingy. I saw it (they showed it to me) sort of like the bottom half of an old tinplate "spinning top" (I think). It was deformed and had a tear in it where it had got bashed by something. Yes they don't fall off, but trying to get someone to admit they made a mistake...very difficult. I did try though.
