I’ve got to get 2 new rear tyres soon. www.etyres.co.uk are the cheapest I’ve found so far.

I’ve got Michelins on at the moment (Pilot Sport I think), but fancy trying something different, especially since the Michelins are nearly £30 more each than some of those listed below. Anyone got any views on the following, either about the tyre, the price or etyres? Currently I’m inclined to go for the Goodyears.

All are 245/40R17Y and the price is each, fitted.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 123.90
Pirelli P Zero Rosso 123.90
Toyo Proxes T1-R 120.90
Bridgestone RE050 129.90

Cheers

Ian

There are loads of threads in this part of the forum on different tyres. The Goodyears tend to come well recommended but other people have different views.

The only thing I'd say about the website you're using is when I fed in the standard tyre size for my car it did not offer either the Continental of Michelin tyre that those manufacturers recommend for the E320CDI.

Round Rubber Ones...............

.........................lol............

..........Sorry.. :)

Falken Tyres

Try the new Falken FK452, £106 each. These are their new sport tyres and they look good as well.
Lots of sizes, and they have the nice square edge profile.
I don't like tyres that have that moulded and bulging look about them with an overlarge rim protector.

Not that cheap for a budget brand

slippery when wet

I have the bridgestone re050 on the rear of my clk 320. Traction control light always on when it is wet. Good tyre in dry and low road noice.

Falken Tyres

Falken tyres are used by some of the teams in the WTCC and are now considered to be a very good tyre.

Part of the problem is the snob value attached to some of the well known brands.

I would not apply the term budget to the FK452, I have them on my E55 and they work extremely well. I would also read some of the independant reviews.

£106 against £190 for a Michelin pilot

You pay's your money you take your choice.

what size you running on the E55 ?

Thanks all for your comments so far. Keep ‘em coming.

As the Michelins are the first tyres I’ve had on the C43, I’ve got nothing to compare them with. They do seem to have loads of grip in the wet – which can be a mixed blessing, as sometimes you may want to ‘play’ and get the back end out. On the other hand, you don’t want any nasty surprises!

Noise-wise the Michelins don’t seem bad, but as I said I’ve got nothing to compare them with.

I’ve also got the Michelins on the front, with loads of tread. I’m assuming it’s not a problem having a different tyre on the rear axle?

I had Dunlop SP9000s on my CLK. Fantastic grip, very quiet and very sexy looking treads too

which independent reviews?

The main requirement is that both tyres on the same axle should be identical.

If you have Michelins on the front, I would be inclined to go for the same tread pattern on the rear. They're undeniably good tyres, and supposedly whilst they cost a little more, they usually last a little longer.

Given you're in the West Midlands try BMTR in Perry Barr. I had some Dunlops fitted on Mrs D's ML at the weekend, and they worked out even cheaper than buying online at the cheapest place I could find!! Service was superb too, and they had them on the shelf - didn't find one other mail order or fitter that could say the same. I'll be going back for some Pirelli P Zero Rossos on the C32 next month.

Which magazine.

My son's Redline and Maxpower mags (sad I know).

Tire rack in the US rated the previous FK451 as very good.

Falken have a good review on their own web site including comments from drivers, ect.

BMW owners club members.

Land Rover monthly did a review for tyres to suit the supercharged sport model.

There are lots more reviews on the web if you do some digging.

Thanks again guys, esp B. Dazz for the BMTR link. For info in case anyone's interested here's what they quoted (I asked for Z rating, but they haven't specified that in the response).

REF TYRE SIZE 245 40 17

Interesting to read some of the comments here guys, - I am planning on going this morning to get 4 new tyres for my C230K.
225/45/17/91w
245/40/17/91w
I am currently running Continental Sport contact 2's. The original front ones are at 3mm, and doing well considering I have covered 51,000 miles, but the rears are the 2nd set and are at just under 3mm. need to change as starting to struggle in the wet.
My partners BMW 320 coupe has Bridgestone runflats - not sure on the model, which give decent grip, but the car dosen't feel quite as 'surefooted' as mine if you do push it.
don't know what to do.

You could try http://www.micheldever.co.uk/. You will need to phone as that seems the best way to contact them. I haven't got any invoices from them near by, but seem to recall they averaged out at £100 a corner for the GSD3s. I buy the tyres from them and get them delivered straight to the tyre place to get them fitted. I have been pleased with the GSD3s and have had them twice now on the C43.
