Whining noise coming from rear of car.

Thought it was the rear tyres so I replaced them. Noise still there. Brought the car to dealer and they advise that oil level in diff was extremely low. They reckong the whining noise is from worn gears in the diff and advise cost of repair would be big money.

Should I believe the dealer ?
Where could I pick up a refurbished diff box ? Would this be a cheaper option ?

Has the oil now been filled and is the noise still there?

Depending on the ratio of your diff I may have an as new spare at 2.65:1. The ratio is on the flange next to the backplate, alternatively it may be possible to find the ratio from the Russian on line parts catalogue.

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb.asp

At a glance your car could have either 2.87:1 or 2.65:1 ratio.

Put your VIN number in and check under the car, the number is on the right flange just by the rear cover.

Do I have to dismantle to see tjhe ratio figure ?
Will have it checked in the morning and get back to you. How much do you want for this ?

Can I run safely as it is for the next few weeks ? I can bare the noise short term I think

No dismantling, just go under the car with some emery cloth or wire wool for the rust then rub the sticking out flange just to the bottom right of the backplate. The ratio is marked on there.

Check the ratio then come back to me. This diff is just under 10K miles old and is good, and even full of new synth oil..ha ha.

Thanks Dieselman, sent you a PM with my chassis no. You might be able to find something on the Russian site ?

Checked with the VIN. The EPC says manual trans uses 2.65:1 and auto uses 2.87:1.

Worth checking though just to be sure.

It will be the pinion bearing if it whines when pulling and quiet when coasting.

There are firms that will re build it, though they are getting few and far in between, just done a web search and did not find one

The parts are available as a kit and rebuilding one isn't hard but a used diff will probably be cheaper.

Will check tomorrow so. Me off to laba land now. Thanks.

Not having alot of luck with my first Merc but I hope the problems are coming to and end after some TLC

Whining noise coming from rear of car. ?

Hmmm, is your car silver? My daughter might have got in it by mistake...

Stevenson's Transmissions in Preston do diff re builds. Last one I had done cost me £315. So Dieselmans offer sounds good to me (assuming it is the correct ratio).

Could not get under the car this evening to inspect the ratio info. Will call into tyre centre tomorrow to see will they lift it for me.

Had the car 6 weeks, first Merc, and here's what I've done so far...

> New tyres on each corner
> New brake pads on each corner
> New spare key had to be ordered
> Fan Control Unit not shutting down for several days. On day of diagnostics it was fine and since then has been fine. They still charged me for the diagnostics.
> Looks like refurbished Diff is now needed

There's also a clanging noise from the engine compartment when I change gears. What could this be ? I'm almost afraid to ask !

Should I sell the bloody thing ?

When you change gears. I thought this was an Auto?

Why no comeback. A trader is a trader anywhere. 3 months warranty.

The clonk could be the diff or the propshaft joints being loose.

Shame I'm having this trouble as I love the car.....

I hope so ! Thanks for the reassurance. Will come back to you with the ratio info tomorrow.

Just as a point of interest most MB dealers call the tiptronic box a manual and it cant be a manual with a tiptronic box
