Whining Noise from rear - Diff ?

I usually find that most whining noises are emitted by wife and/or children, no doubt you've checked that one

:) :) :) :) :) That's why I've banned the kids from the Merc !

DieselMan - Could not see the diff ratio information you referred to. So, I hope I can order a refurbished unit by giving the chassis no.

What should I expect to pay for refurbished diff ???

Regarding Clonking sound the propshaft bolts are good and tight. The noise appears to be coming from the fan belt tensioner. Is this possibly due replacement ?

2001 E220 CDi Avantgarde Tiptronic
Whining noise coming from rear of car.

Thought it was the rear tyres so I replaced them. Noise still there.

Should I believe the dealer ?

Fatherin law has a w210 E320 CDI and had a whining noise, took it to a mechanic who said it was a rear wheel bearing, changed both and nose was still there, turned out to be a warped brake disc! (fopund by an independant mb specialist) but that wouldn't explain the noise your getting when you select gears,
I'm sure Dieselman will sort you out but it was just another not too expensive idea to throw in to the ring

As I said earlier, if it whines when you are pulling but is quiet on the over run, then it is the diff.
Wheel bearings normally start at about 30mph and the noise is there all of the time.

Some tyres can cause a whine, Avon had some a couple of years back that made an awful noise after a few K miles

Be absolutly certain that the diff is causing the noise.

MB diff's are usually very good. I have not heard one whine since driving a 2.5 16V 190.

I agree with you, the noise from the diff is unmistakable, just drive at 40-50 on a level road, and you will know instantly

Picture of ratio marking on rear corner of diff.

As to cost from a breaker or refurbished I've no idea but not cheap.

Don't forget it's run dry of oil.

When the oil gets old they do whine.

Thanks for the picture Dieselman, will check again this evening.

No noise upto about 60mph
After 60 constant whining from rear
New Tyres fitted, made no difference
Definitely not a wheel bearing

Hi Dieselman, checked the ratio of the diff thsi evening and it is 2.87.1
Did you say you had this one spare ? If so, how much do you want for it ?

I have more bad news I think. The engine does not tick over smoothly when idle so I had a local mechanic take a look. He inspected the pullys and is quite sure the water pump is on its way out. The pully was very hot and there was some play.

Should I take his word for it ?
Is this a big, expensive job ?

VERY VERY close to selling the bloody thing now.

I only have a diff with ratio 2.65:1 so it's no good for you.

I purchased it to change ratio from 2.87:1 but it doesn't work due to the autobox variant coding being wrong so stops the box working properly.

The water pump going as well is a hassle.

Check the breakers for a diff, there must be loads of broken E220CDi autos by now.

The 2.87 ratio diff is used in other diesels as well, E300 turbo, E320CDi, C220Cdi, C250 Turbo so there should be one somewhere.
BUT it MUST be the 2.87:1 ratio.

As a short term measure squirting some Molybdenum grease into the diff might quieten it down as that adheres to the worn surfaces.

Are you sure there is no warranty on this car??

Definitely NO warranty on this car.

Is the water pump likely to be an expensive repair ?

Just had an email from a breakers in Northern Ireland. They can supply a diff for £200. Is this about right ?

That's not a bad price, anything upto £300 wouldn't be unusual.

Try Mercman.net in Southampton and mention this forum. Ricky is a member here (V12).

If you need to spread the costs for now I'd get he water pump done and squirt some grease into the diff unless it's very noisy, then get the diff done later.

where in the country are you? if you have no luck i know someone that will rebuild it for you...

I am actually in a place called Co. Wexford, South East Ireland. I am willing to get the ferry over and stay a night if I can get this done in the UK !

My source in Northern Ireland has come back advising that there are 3 sizes of diff using the 2.87.1 ratio - small, medium and large. I haven't a clue which one it is sio I am sending pictures.

What will I get for my car in the UK today if a trade in against another vehicle. Paid £8,400 for it 8 weeks ago and have spent nearly £1,000 on it.

Just tell Gerald you need the same as in my picture.

I can supply a casing part number if he's confused but I believe all the W210 2.87:1 diffs are the same casing.

Basically some have the backplate projecting past the side and different drive flanges. You don't want that type.

I think it will be the medium size.
small is low torque applications such as 1.8, 2.0 petrol.

Thanks for the links Television

Dieselman I will send your picture to Gerard Molloy http://mercedespartsuk.net/ and see if he can supply. This is my preferred choice.

Purchased water pump and fan belt tensioner today so they get installed before weekend. £100 for the lot.

My mechanic not happy with squirting grease into diff, says it would liquify due to heat ?

Molybdenum grease should do the opposite on hot/worn surfaces.

I agree the best route is to change the diff...I would.
