Whole car shakes at 100mph, Ideas?

Thanks all for your advice and help, the car is going to end up going back to the garage I bought it from.. Another journey home from work and another problem.. Had it on cruise control, set at 70mph, yes that's 70mph and not 100mph : ) Go up a hill and it kicks down and then looses all power and begins to loose speed untill it reaches the top of the hill. After that it's very slugish and won't accelerate above 75mph unless it's going downhill. Get off the A1 and find out it now has a missfire and the engine is very noisy at high revs. Not liking the sound of this so on the phone first thing in the morning. Wish me luck, only had the car 2 months.

Hi

I remember taking my old C230K to the dealers not long after getting it and telling them it had a little vibration in it at 80mph.
Right away they got on the defensive saying "we dont have the facility to test the car at 80mph sir"
I replied "You have the facility to sell cars that can do nearly twice that speed" and left.

230K

hi it does sound like the wheels(also check the tread on the tyres for uneven wear or bulges) check suspension for leaks to me but it could be the hardy spicer joint on the propshaft.also hope this speed was on a test track as the speed limit is 70 mph tut tut tut (lol)

I had the same problem on the SEC with the new wide wheels....

I balanced and balanced but same issues.

Last night i balanced them on our machine which i got calibrated especially by the company that sold it to us...

At the same time i replaced the steering damper (which was well & truly shot) and also fitted some spigot rings on the inside of the wheels which means that they now fit perfectly onto the car. (aftermarket wheels that had slightly bigger centre holes than mercedes standard)

Anyway, i have lost all shake below 90 but can feel it a bit at higher speeds, but much much better and can live with it now... i was thinking of getting rid of the wheels up till now as i cant stand shakes!

so not sure what cured the problem but i think the damper had its part to play.

I had a similar smartarse comment about wind noise on a volvo once.
My response was "Then I would like you to correct the problem so that it performs within acceptable tolerances from the factory"
They got the message. They didn't get my repeat business. (worst car I have ever owned, worst dealership I have ever known)

Any update on this?

I ask as my W215 started doing the same thing this evening. Vibration at 90-100. I thought I had a flat so pulled over, nothing. Pulled back out, accelerated to 70-80 smooth as ever.

Quick burst to 90-100 to check and it came back after about 1/4 of a mile. Came to a roundabout, which meant a full stop.

No recurrence after that although I did not go above 80 after that. No vibration through the wheel, no signs of uneven tread wear.

I will get garage to check if I've thrown a weight or if there are any signs of propshaft wear.

Quick update. I got my rear wheel balance checked on a road load machine and sure enough, it looks as though one wheel had shed a weight. 90-100 mph (on the autobahn, honest guv!) is now as smooth as ever.
