Hello, Lidl is selling W5 15W40 spec 228.1 and 229.1 and winergy 15W40 spec 229.1 at good prices.
Mercedes told me they used 0W40 before. Will it be OK to jump to 15W40  or not at all  ? Too thick perhaps?
cheers :bannana:

Come on Olivier - you're already pouring carp into your tank, and now you're wanting to do the same at the oil filler?

Go on, the car is running fine, if the WVO is properly filtered it work. The oil is stamped 229.1, I know its lidl and there will be some "EEK!" feeling, but if it's MB 229.1 complient, this must be OK. I just wonder if 15W40 might be too thick? I also change the oil every 5000.

I would say 15/40 is fine especially if you are changing it every 5k.

Will that be OK winter time as well? Not that the weather is warming up a lot here...

I would use 10W-40 or 5W-40 to help the tappets stay clear, especially as you run veg oil, which tends to thicken the oil a bit anyway.
The proper spec is MB-228.3.

find this.

What mean SHPD? Wonder what is the difference between 228.1 and 228.3?

MB 228.1
Multigrade engine oils for turbocharged diesel engines. Oil change intervals up to
30,000 km.

MB 228.2
Monograde SHPD engine oils for highly turbocharged diesel engines.

MB 228.3
SHPD engine oils for highly turbocharged diesel engines. Extended oil change intervals
up to 45,000 km.

Is the old 606 a SHPD engine?

Olivier.

Have you tried Pentland Components? Valvoline stockists and good for spares too. Leith or Sighthill.

You are taking the trouble to change the oil every 5k miles and then you are thinking of buying unbranded unknown quality oil (I assume anyway if it is coming from lidl).
There is a trade off between frequency of change and the quality of the oil. It may be better to change the oil at 7500 or even 10000 mile intervals but use better oil.
You are already "saving" a lot by doing it yourself so don't try to save a few more "pennies" and buy some awful oil.
Take a look in German Swedish French at their prices on Fuchs oil - the semi synth 10/40 is about £13.50 for 5 litres at the moment - which is not expensive. Even the fully synth 10/40 is under £20. How cheap do you want to run a Merc?

As cheap as chips :D
This is why I got it actually, not for the fame or the statu but to run it really cheap. I am totally broke, but this car is still cheaper to run then a renault clio or a ford K  as I do the work myself (ish), my indie when I need him is great and charge me little, got free ish fuel (which is the most expensive on a car I reckon ), It's a 1997, then the tax don't go up etc... I use to spend as much (or more )in a 500 CC scooter in fuel and maintenance( Italians are a pain to maintain actually) and I am happilly driving a really nice car.
Fuchs oil sound good. It's a good price and this is 10/40, which is better then the 15/40. Thank you ;)

As I understand it, 0WX will get around a cold engine much more quickly than 15WX. Most engine wear happens when cold -- meaning cold engine rather than cold environment, although the latter also counts of course. I'd rather err in favour of lubricating a cold engine properly.

That's what I am worry a bit, but 15W is for general mild weather, good for what ever summer we can have here in scotland I reckon. But better be safe and go for the Fuchs in 10W. Better be safe then sorry :)

I fully agree Roger - when all cold, all oil is much too thick, even 0Wxx.

I use a 5W40 in my OM606, and as I don't pour rubbish into the fuel tank, it stays in there for the recommended 9,000 miles. Even so, the decent quality oil is such a cheap part of the car's overall running cost, it barely registers.

This is actually what Fuchs just told me. Not in stock though but worth the 9000 miles, perhaps when I got it priced.

and as I don't pour rubbish into the fuel tank

:ban:tut tut...
