Will a double mattress fit in a W202 estate?

As title really!

Need to move one of these 200 miles next week, it's fairly new so don't want to bend it all shapes in the car.

Anyone had any experience of putting one in?

I don't think you'll get a normal-sized double mattress in any estate car. We used a hire van last time.

You might be able to do it with roof bars but you'd need to keep the speed right down ... wouldn't want to go 200 miles.

I couldn't fit one in my Volvo 850 estate, so I doubt it'd go in the C-class.

I stuck it on my Handirack

Nice rack!! BUT-Surely there must me some slight movement of the rack whilst driving, especially on the motorway at speed? That said, the tiniest bit of grit or grime between the bottom of the rack and the roof surely must scratch the paintwork? Imagine putting this rack on a dirty car:eek:

Quality bit of kit! I would definitely splash out on one, only takes 1 occasion when you'd need to hire a van instead and it's paid for.

A soft rack is, to me, far more preferable than the Hellfrauds one I purchased for my Nissan Primera ages ago- The adaptor kit had a slight design fault in that the bar assembly could move laterally and make large gouges in my roof

Unlikely..............
A standard mattress is 4'-6" wide x 6'-3" long.
A King size mattress is 5' wide x 6'-6" long.

You would need a large transit sized van to get one of those in without bending. I would not put a mattress on roof rails. Too bendy and difficult to secure properly. Specially over 200 miles.

I wouldn't trust those inflatable thingys. What happens if one deflates during the journey.

You are either going to have to bend it to get it in - or bite the bullet and hire a van. Dont you know someone with a van who will lend it to you for a day plus the price of a pint?

Arnold Shark hire vans out cheap. A transit is what we used, plus we then used it as transport for the whole duration of the weekend.

There's no movement to speak of. You strap the thing down, with straps running inside the car, and the you close the doors over the straps, so it's all located pretty securely. I've recently added roof bars (lengthways) to my car (for looks), so in future the Handirack will be even more secure.

Yeah, probably isn't good for the paintwork, but the Volvo's a 'patinated' workhorse anyway, so I'm not bothered. ;)

I'm well pleased with it. It lives in the boot, in a bag about the size of a small shoebox, and it's always ready for action!

They're guaranteed up to a certian weight (50kg?) And they're very strong, so I have no fears on that front.

Anyone know how much a standard sized mother in law weighs? (I am not brave enought to ask her...)

yes, Monster-in-laws weigh more than the earth. Think Robert Saunders and you are about half way there.

Basically you would be better off putting the driving seat up there and threading the controls thru the sunroof.

Yes, a W124 estate would be great in this scenario.

I'll give it a go, if it has to be bent a bit then so be it.

Must admit the C Class estate isn't exactly the largest of estates i've ever owned... :)

Providing you dont bend it more than about 60-70 degrees at any one point then no harm should be done. Just try to keep the journey time as short as possible.

Why not just hire a hotel room like everyone else?

Oh.....

I can find my own way out, thanks.
