Just to clear a few things up here,

The tinted window offence does not carry any points and I don't know of any plans to change that.

The fitting of aftermarket tints is not in itself illegal. It only becomes so if the light transmitted by the window becomes less than 70% (75% for windscreen). The problems start because most cars with factory fitted tints are taken to within 1 or 2 % of the legal limit.

As I think we are all aware the rear windows can be as dark as you wish.

I had my windows tinted (very light tint) some years ago on my Shogun, I think the front windows may now be illegal but I am really not sure. I get pulled up all the time on the way home from work (between 0200 - 0400) and the police have not mentioned it once. To be honest I find the cops OK and they tend to just say sorry for pulling me over but it is better to be safe then sorry, and I do not even have a shandy when diving I have nothing to worry about.

MOT info here, and download the reference file. If your vehicle is illegal it will invalidate your insurance.

There are quite a few things which are illegal but wouldn't fail an MOT.

Registration plate colours is one. Try going for you next test with pink and green plates on and see if it fails.

I have to say, I've noticed a lot of cars recently with VERY dark front tinting. It does wind me up somewhat, particularly since it's popular with the criminal fraternity to hide who's driving/what they're up to...

Ban all tints, except on late model Mercedes, that's what I'd say...

over the past few months this forum seems to loosing the plot,carrotchomper your view on tinted windows should be removed by the admin guys as its total crap and is taking up space on the servers we use..i wanted to use much stronger language bu dont want a ban.....

Same Law applies to dark visors for Motorcyclists, legally you could have on two eye patches and be talked through the traffic by your pillion, Interesting thought, if you know what I mean, "Dont get me started"
