Windows 10 now being forced out...

Mine downloaded the upgrade (forced) but I haven't installed it. This was a month or so ago. I've been working away this week though so maybe I'll come back to a shock, I like everything on my system my way so I'll be annoyed if anything has changed

The update is a permanent window on my screen which I can't close, I just leave it in the background and don't touch it. Might play about with its embedded file to disable it but I can't be bothered

Very annoying that they're forcing it on us, but as others have said it's pretty good then I may let it install eventually

Does anyone else run Adobe CS9 programs on there? How do they perform? I use my PC for design work so I really don't want any headaches over something that works fine as it is currently

I'm sorry, but that's just nonsense.

Oh, and if you're talking about Apple computers - it's Mac, not MAC (which is a network address i.e. Media Access Control) ... and the plural is formed by adding "s", without apostrophe ... and my Apple Mac laptops happily running OS, two versions behind the latest one, with everything working as it should.

Please accept my unreserved apology for not saying Macs (Mackintosh was changed to Mac in 1998)

First World problems eh! :bannana:

** Updates are cumulative, with each update built upon all the updates that preceded it. A device needs to install the latest update to remain supported. Updates may include new features, fixes (security and/or non-security) or a combination of both. Not all features in an update will work on all devices. A device may not be able to receive updates if the device hardware is incompatible, lacking current drivers, or otherwise outside the Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (“OEM”) support period. Update availability may vary, for example by country, region, network connectivity, mobile operator (e.g. for mobile-capable devices) or hardware capabilities (including e.g. free disk space).

They are going to end the free upgrade in July, so if you might want it there's not that much time left.

I did try 10 on my home laptop and wasnt that keen on it. Far better than 8 and 8.1 but still not quite as good as 7. I would not dream of carrying out an upgrade on our business systems until it had matured into a decent final product, ie post SP1.

As for Macs(spelt right in case your bothered hehe) Its a bit of a pain, some applications require the latest and greatest OS, but this then breaks other applications.

We use final cut pro for our video work and often we have to upgrade as our clients send us projects from the new versions that will only load after upgrade, so here we are on El Capitan with a working FC Pro yet a few other applications we need to use now have faults as they do not yet support it.

create a text file and paste the following inside it

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx]
"DisableGwx"=dword:00000001

now save it as disable10.reg - double click the file and allow it to be imported into your registry. Windows 10 will now stop trying to install.

If anyone copies this registry key, and it copies the space in between Win and downs, you will need to lose the space for it to work correctly.

Windows 10 is the PC answer to the android/iOS mobile operating system and once upgraded/installed we will never have to purchase another PC operating system as MS will simply push updates to the PC, just like Android and Apple do to phones.

My understanding was that Windows 10 is the last of the old school operating systems, and it would be the successor "Windows" which would be the subscription model.

I have no idea how that space came in, maybe my hands were shaking at the thought of installing win10 :)

I get I little pale blue pop up every time I start my pc offering the W10 upgrade.

However, our computer is old and slow and I'm not sure how it would perform with update. I know nothing about computers and TBH not bothered either way.

Do I upgrade or not? Pros v's cons?

Check my post above to see if it's possible with the tool

Haha. Sorry mate. I assumed you meant this one ^^^

I'll do as in post 16. Cheers, Ant. :thumb:

The way to stop it is to disable automatic updates in Control Panel.

Would this work on an old Tosh laptop on XP that I intend to keep simply to access the EPC? I'm swapping my main W7 desktop for an iMac.

I tried W10 and it drove me mad, no Start menu, no proper 'right click' dropdown. What's wrong with them? ...stuff Bill Gates.

XP is not offered a free update so that won't be touched it is also pretty unsecured hence the message but as long as you don't connect to the Internet then it's reasonably safe.

Not sure what you mean by the start button (it also stops the PC on XP) as there is still a round button in the left corner to click on then select all apps for a list in alphabetical order. Failing that the search facility is now very good and will find your apps as long as you have a reasonable idea what they are called

You only get the upgrade offered if you have 7, 8 or 8.1 (used to be 8 people had to update to 8.1 but I believe they relaxed this later I think).

So if you have Fista, you are stuffed but then as you have lived with it for a decade - you must really not care.

:D

I have no idea how that space came in, maybe my hands were shaking at the thought of installing win10 :)

It's not you - it's the BB software.

If you quote your post with the reg key - you'll see the space is not there.

It seems publishing the post adds in the space - but that is from where people would copy it.

I think you would be fairly safe connecting it to the Internet per se sat behind a router with firewall - it's more what you do once you are connected to the Internet.

If you did regular browsing, you are asking for trouble. If you run an up to date browser, you can mitigate some of the risk but still dodgy.

If you just went to the very big sites and left your email hosted on say Yahoo or Hotmail i.e. didn't download it - you would probably be OK but not 100% although larger sites tend to have the monitoring / security to prevent most hacking attempts.

So you might get away with it if you just checked your email in Hotmail, just did your online banking and looked on here!

The more sites you browse, the larger the risk.

However, if you are running XP still, you are probably running a really crap old machine so treat yourself to a new machine with SSD and i5 processor and spend left of your life wondering if you might get hacked or waiting for your machine to boot / start applications.

:D

So guess what happened today. Got home after a day out, logged in to the PC, came back 10 mins later and it had already started installing Win10 :wallbash:

Not best pleased. Most of the evening gone on the install and trying to figure everything out afterwards.

Hey ho.

WN10 is fine, don't fret...

I found it quite intuitive

Windows 10. Super stable for me and think is the best so far....though cannot recall all that many problems with 8.1 !

What stuffed most people was the not-intuitive located menus etc. at various corners of the screen and the huge Start Menu.

10 brings it back closer to 7 which a lot of people still like.

I prefer 10 now and I am rolling it out where I am now.

7 feels quite old school now in comparison.

However, a wipe and re-install is essential for a more grief-free experience (albeit not immune).

One thing to bear in mind is "it will work on any machine which already runs 7, 8 or 8.1" is nice, but some of the drivers are still a bit buggy in 10.
