Windows 8?

I can't comment on how good the accounting products are, but purely from a cost-saving point of view, for £700 I would probably get to a scenario where I either ran it on my existing machine and leave it there (you could wipe, re-install and you would only need to put on Sage - Windows XP boot up very fast with no AV and other crapware) - then run everything else on the new machine or, if that is the only thing you really use, it might be worth investing in Ultimate 7 and running proper XP emulation mode. It wont cost you £700 to set the latter up.

Certainly worth getting someone to try it on 8 but I have my reservations if it is already not-supported on XP! You can be lucky mind...

Windows 7 and 8 both have a compatibility mode. This allows you to install and run XP programs (It actually has compatibility all the way back to windows 95). If you right click the setup/install file and go to properties you will see a compatibility tab. open and choose windows xp service pack 3. Then at the bottom check run as Administrator. Click on OK then run the setup/install.

Yup - I referred to that in post #15 but as I say - I've tried numerous old programs and probably only got one or two to work out of a 10s of programs...

Is worth a try but will never be as good as XP or proper XP emulation in 7 / 8.

I'm in need of a new desktop but one of the programs I use and depend on is an 8 year old Sage Line 50 and I don't know if it'll run on Windows 8. It's an expensive program and I ain't happy about buying a new one
Sage Line 50 should run in Windows 8 but you'll probably need to adjust the Compatability Mode Option in the shortcut properties.

I've managed to keep a customer's DOS copy of Sage running in W7 with a couple of tweaks and it even prints to an aging Epson dot-matrix printer.

Worst case scenario - Get new PC, install VirtualBox or VirtualPC, stick XP in the virtual machine and continue as normal.
