Last week my PC crashed big style so I had to use the manufacturers recovery disk to reinstall Windows XP. Since then Windows Media Player displays video in poor quality colour a bit like a 256 colour display. My display is set to 32bit high colour and my NVidia card has the latest drivers. I updated Media Player to v10 but no joy.

I downloaded Divx. Same problem.

MS support no help. Any ideas?

I'm not having a good week PC wise. First the big crash and reinstall with loss of programmes, data, GTA San Andreas save games etc. etc. Then when I tried to reinstall Paint Shop Pro the disk exploded in the drive knackering the DVD RW drive. I'll have to post a pic of the disk fragments.

If you go to Tools, Options... then select the Performance Tab. At the bottom of the tabbed window select the Advanced... button.

Make a note of the settings for the Video Acceleration, then have a little play with the settings for Use High Quality Mode/Use Overlays/ Use video mixing renderer. You may find that unchecking 'Use Overlays' may help. If there is no noticeable effects then return the settings to how you found them.

I've had that happen too! I had a game disk explode in a x52 speed CDRW drive. It was surprisingly loud when it went too. I did manage to shake enough fragments out to use the drive again, but I still have to give it a helping hand opening and closing the tray! I only keep it for a spare and emergencies.

It was one hell of a bang!

Nice one!!! I unchecked "Use Overlays" and that seems to have sorted it. Thanks for the help.
