I going to buy some winter tyres and was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with the following:-

Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D
Nokian WR D3
Nokian WR A3
Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3

I know i leaving out the conti's but the ones above all have had some good rests in winter tests

Thanks

Paul

Don't disregard Kuhmo, I had Izen KW27 for a couple of winters on my 203. Great tyre, excellent grip in the deep fresh snow as well as hard packed stuff. Didn't feel too squidgy in the milder weather either!

I used Hankook winters. I was very impressed with them.

I've used the Nokian D3's and they were very good. Not sure what size you want, but IIRC D3's stop at 16". Only experience with A3's is buying a set for latest eclass addition, so I'll have to wait until Easter to give you a proper opinion on them.

I have also used Goodyear ultragrip 8's. They were very good too, if a tad noisy.

Cheers

lol even more to look at now, i'm getting them from germany as they have lots of stock and some of the tyres are alot cheaper

I've had experience of kumho, goidyear, avon, falken and nokian tyres albeit on my wife and my saabs - one manual and one auto. . I'd go nokian every time if they are reasonably priced.

They are as good as any others in snow, but the real advantage I've found is performance in the wet or if it warms up a bit. Wear rates very good too.

also is it worth going for Mercedes spec tyres ??? is there much differance compaired to a std one???

I have Nokian A3s for both my VWs and although they haven't experienced proper winter weather yet, it's been a very good tyre in terms of noise, wear and handling.

I went with Nokian after having had WR G2 tyres fitted in 2009 for going skiing. They're more of a all-season compound with a winter tread but were absolutely excellent for all the harsh winters we've had since then. I also ran them year-round on the Phaeton for 24 months without any issues.

Many Thanks for all your comments but i now just even more confused lol

I hope it wasn't me talking about the compound and treads!

Traditionally, winter tyres used to use a combination of winter tread (lots of grooves to disperse slush and sipes to give grip on snow) and a winter compound which provided more traction on ice and compacted snow. However, the winter compound is softer and tends to wear more quickly.

Most of the performance winter tyres now tend to offer enhanced treadwear at the cost of ice grip. Since the weather in most of Western Europe rarely leads to extended period of snow and ice, this seems to be a reasonable trade off.

Unfortunately, there's no international definition of what constitutes a winter tyre and the manufacturers usually tailor the tyres to the markets they're likely to be used in. However, most winter tyres will have the little mountain & snowflake logo on the side (which is a North American thing) indicating "severe service rating". Basically, if the tyre you're considering has this on it, it will provide more than enough capability for UK conditions.

I hope that helps somewhat!

so out of all the comments what tyre have been fitted to RWD cars as I expect some tyres work better on FWD gonna have to order today so far the Dunlop Winter sport 4D are looking best @ £103 each

well just order the Nokian WR A3 a set of 4 cost £340 delivered

You should be very happy with them - if anything, the sharper turn-in meant I enjoyed driving on them more than my Goodyear Asymmetric 2s.

Of course, we'll probably only see 5 flakes of snow across the whole UK this year but the feeling of being prepared is a good one ;)

As far as anyone can tell there is no difference between MO tyres and non-MO tyres.

I went for MO tyres myself, but this was for the same reason that the pen in my glove compartment has the Mercedes Benz logo... plus in my case the MO tyres were priced the same as non-MO.

These are all season so will stay on all year.

I have only bought all season tyres once and they were truly "all season" if you include being useless in "all seasons", wouldn't waste my money again.

The Nokian All Weather Plus (as well as Vredestein Quatrac and Hankook Optimo 4S) get very good write ups and even surpass some pure winter tyres in some areas
