Winter wheel sizes

Hi

I am seriously considering purchasing some other wheel and having some winter tyres on for this winter as I am lead to believe that we are in for a harsh winter and I need to stay mobile.

My car currently has a staggered AMG 18" set up, can I just get some standard W211 steel rims or basic alloys from another W211 e-class or do I need to get a particular size?

Take a look in your handbook to see what size winter wheels and tyres are recommended. You need to be careful that you have sufficient clearance for the brake discs, amongst other things.
 
Hi Tan, all depends what will fit over ur calipers and disks!

I have 18" AMG staggered set up on my CLK500.......I sourced winter tyres in standard 18" sizes and will get my local tyre fitter to change my summer tyres for the winter ones anytime now......I ran the winter tyres last on the 18" AMG rims and had vastly improved traction and driveablity.

I did this as I wanted the car to look original and not have cheap rims on.

I got the tyres from Mytyres.
 
Without wishing to sound rude or obnoxious I cannot understand the whole winter / summer tyres scenario.

The car was designed with wheels at great expense through research to be built with a wheel suitable for the vehicle to take a tyre which was suitable all year round.

The fitting of oversize wheels (17's to 18 or 19's etc) to enhance the appearance of a vehicle during summer months confuses me.

Why not stick to the original wheels and have a tyre fitted that's suitable for both winter and summer?

With all due respect, my car was designed (at great expense) to be fitted with 17" or 18" wheels as standard. Indeed, due to the size of the brake discs I cannot fit smaller diameter wheels to this car.

Also summer and winter tyres have different rubber compounds. Winter tyres wear in summer and summer tyres do not give grip in snow. There is a reason why most of northern Continental Europe have to change to winter tyres between November / March.

99% of normal tyres sold in the UK are summer tyres. There are very few true all season tyres, and when you get to 17" rims or bigger the choices are few and far between. Compare the prices of summer performance tyres, plus a cheaper set of wheels with smaller winter tyres, and the costs over a 3 or 4 years period are similar or cheaper than fitting all season tyres. All season tyres are also a compromise in all conditions, not that too many people would exceed the dry or wet grip with normal road driving.
