Ive just bought a second hand Linksys wireless router, Ive had a go at setting it up myself (it came with no manuals or software), connected it up and its not working.

My laptop can 'see' the router, it connects but virtually no information comes from it. It has excellent signal strength, but cannot conect to the net.

Any idea's?

Probably log-in details etc. to your ISP?

What is the model number? Should be able to find a manual on the Linksys site

Its a WAG54G v2

I always thought it would be plug 'n' play with a router though :(

Im hoping to use the router for my Wii and my laptop

For support info, take a look here.

If you're using this as an ADSL router, then as Gollom says the most likely cause of failure is incorrect PPPoA Userid and/or Password.

a probem that i found make sure if it is adsl or dsl make sure you have the right plug attached to phone line that is a little problem that gets over looked all the time

Thanks for your replies guys.

I will have a look at the link. Ive checked the connections Wall->micro filter->modem

Ive noticed the internet LED is red, not green aswell..

Don't try to set it up in the first instance using a wireless link - connect to it with an ethernet cable.

Few things:

1. do the factory reset
2. this router can be flashed with different firmware so you will have to tell us what you can see on first screen.
Usually - connect your laptop to any ports, open web browser and go to 192.168.1.1

do the screenshot and I will give you step by step instructions what to do:)

Cheers
Chris

You have factory reset the router and put your internet details in haven't you?
Routers are not plug and play ( well ones that Sky et al send out are as they input your details at source.)

You need to factory reset it, then input your details and then it may work.

Thanks again, im going to have another go.

I have no idea what my username/password is as I simply connected the ethernet cable when i 1st got the net here...

BT, might ahve to give them a call

I know with mine (i`m with AOL) i had to set the router up to connect to the internet using a login name and password. Look at the router as being a PC, it`s that that is connecting to the internet not your computer, you need to set it up for a connection.

I'm not being funny here, just trying to assess your ability :) but you do have *any* idea what you're doing? :D

The bt login is just [email protected] (anything can be literally anything) and there's no password. If the router insists on a password then enter password.

The quick install guide, http://tinyurl.com/6cgmdg on the page that someone liked to earlier, should get you going.

Of course, this assums your ADSL is working, that you have an ethernet cable to connect to the router and that the router isn't broken!

ETA:
I should add that BT uses PPPoA, so once you get through all the steps in section D(f) on the 2nd page on the instructions, you can jump to section G - so most of the complicated looking stuff on the second page doesn't apply anyway.

Once you've set it up, turn off the router and computer. Reboot the router, let it settle, and then boot the computer.

Good point Rory that's probably the a key bit of info Karl needs.

That is not true:)
