Worst Road in UK/World

Fighting home down the main road in Muscat today I was wondering if it might be the worst road on earth, 75mph limit, dust & sand, aggressive driving, pedestrians crossing, phones'a'texting....

...then I remembered the M6 on a Friday.

The cruellest thing about the M6 is that somtimes it 'teases' you with a little uncongested mile, or maybe an optimistic electronic sign.

Clearly none of you have been to China. Outside of the major cities it's carnage, poor roads combined with a country that really only has 10 years history of driving cars. They still drive them like mopeds it is truly a white knuckle ride.

The 80-mile stretch between Western Sahara and Mauritania...

The road ends at some point and you need to cross a field of corrugated dust that is almost guaranteed to shake the bolts holding your engine up...

Oh yeah, and it's a minefield too...

M.

Any road around the centre of Cairo. Not only are the roads full of holes, bumps, sand and camel crap but the egyptains have devised a way of getting 6 cars across on a road intended to take 2 lanes of traffic , seriously scary stuff!!

Almost any road in Sheffield!! You need a 4x4 as it's virtually cross-country through the potholes!

As someone who lives and works in Sheffield I couldn't agree more with that.

And it's not just roads **** because of pot holes (which make our roads worse than a 3rd world country) but it's also the vast number of traffic lights and built out bus stops, chicanes and other insane measures implemented by a car hating council.

I have driven all over England and have found no where as bad. I prefer driving in central London at rush hour to Sheffield. At least the roads there are trying to funnel you in/out - here they are designed to hold you up and hoard everyone onto the same road at every opportunity.

Muscat is nothing unless it rains, then you can't drive for all the smashed, piled up cars blocking the roads, only place in the world I know of where they build shopping centres and even McDonalds in a Wadi!! Try the Sharjah - Dubai road at anything after 5:30 in the morning on a week day - then you really will have something to complain about!

If you want a bad road try following one of those Wadi’s inland or go for a drive into the mountains or interior, you will truly see the worst and most dangerous roads in the world - no doubt.

The Oman also has one of the very BEST roads on the planet at Musandam, God Oh God it is truly amazing & only slightly better than New Zealand’s South Island roads.

By the way, did you see the "Welcome to Oman" sign in the airport right after you clear immigration...... and what are you doing in The Oman in any case, if you don’t mind me asking??

Ah mudster the road to Wujin. How the taxis survive is beyond me. Dont think they have suspension to start with.
