I had the misfortune to have to drive home from Manchester airport at 16:30 yesterday, my journey home means I have to go from the south of Manchester to the north, oh the joys of the M60 at rush hour. As it happens, there was fog over most of Manchester. If we were driving on country roads then I could have excused the use of fog lights, however, crawling along the M60 at between 5 - 10 mph for an hour........

Without any exaggeration there must have been 30% - 40% of the traffic with their rear fog lights on, for gods sake man, I'm only 5 metres off your rear bumper!

Rant over :(

I blame Sally Traffic. If its foggy out there she says put your fog lights on. A greater service would be to say if you are in a queue and its foggy, have some consideration for other road users and turn your fog lights off 'til traffic clears.

It does my tree in too Pete.

I travelled from London to Glasgow yesterday, there was a lot of fog after Birmingham until the Lake District, all the electronic signs were warning of fog too, but a lot of cars still had no lights on at all. Seems a lot of motorists need educating one way or another.

Remember to have the rear fogs on it often means the front ones have to be on...

Look, it's a fog light. You've paid for it. You don't get much chance to use it. Hey, it's foggy outside, fill yer boots!...;) :D

Logic, common sense and consideration fly out of the window with a lot of drivers in anything other than 'perfect' driving conditions. :wallbash:

Another one that annoys me is some of these headlight conversions you can get, which cause blinding light from oncoming traffic and which surely can't be legal. Maybe if we had some real thick fog, the back glare from these lights would make the drivers (mainly boy racers and Asian taxi drivers) realise how dangerous and useless they are. Then again maybe not. :ban:

It's amazing how many people use there front fog lights when it's not foggy. It realy pi**es me off.

.... and do not get me started on people who do not put their dipped headlights on when its raining or in low light conditions..... just saying...

+1
And people who drive on sidelights.I mean, whats the point in that?

I can understand having the fog lights on "because it's foggy" but some will leave them on for days because they didn't turn them off when they got home.

Should only be used when visibility is less than 100 meters really

" I'm only 5 metres off your rear bumper!" In Fog,

At 5mph.....................

It may be different in your neck of the woods, but trust me, if you leave a bigger gap that that on the M60 when traffic is at 5mph then you get get a stream of cars pulling into the gap in front.

Hate that too. I try to leave a gap between my vehicle and the motor in front (what we used to call an "operation out" for shall we say tactical/defensive reasons). Fat chance of anyone understanding why or respecting that distance you leave between you and the motor in front.

Should I be pressing on and I'm approaching an off ramp I move into the middle lane at the three hundred yard marker for the off ramp. This is so as not to suck the door handles off anyone who may be "not focused" joining to motorway on the sister on ramp :D.

I think that logic goes back to the days when driving with headlights on did use to drain the battery ... obviously not the case with modern motoring:thumb:

Is there not any guidance in the Highway Code, and/or the theory part of the Driving Test??

In my experience here are 2 types of inappropriate fog light users. The first are the boy racers in their corsas who think it is the cool to drive as fast as their clapped out engines will permit with their front fog lights always on. They always seem to also have misaligned headlights as well.

The other group is from the opposite end of the age spectrum. They over-react to the slightest hint of mist and fire up their blinding rear fog lights while trundling along at less than half the speed limit.

To jump on the band wagon....I drove to Newcastle and back today, and at worst I encountered heavy mist, I lost count of the number of cars / vans with rear fogs on just in case it suddenly turned into fog! I'm always tempted to give them some main beam.....but 2 wrongs dont make a right!
