03 E55k for a good price...but what do i need to know

mine aint the 55, but its the 500 and i use it as a daily driver, 45 mile round trip for me to work and back, if im good i get 80-90miles out of £20.

really! thats interesting can i ask whats your average speed how hards the engine working and whats your average mpg?

i have a nice run to work with out any traffic, country lanes, say about 40-60 mph, engine in normal "D" mode engine is workin about 1200-1500 revs.

but saying that im not wanting to pay nearly 20k for a car to have it lie around.
Precisely :) Buy a nice car, the least you can do is drive it. So my choice would be a car that you are more likely to use given the opportunity.

The E500 may be a good bet. They ain't exactly slow, cheaper to fuel, insure and for your money you'll get a newer one....

If i was going to tempt myself again into a Mercedes then it would only have to be the E55 mainly because they'll hold there money much better for what they are and for that supercharged engine.

Whether or not in todays climate there a No1 choice for an everyday car im not too sure...especially at 10MPG!!!!!

I really want to go for this car but after a few months of pressing the loud pedal i know that im likely to get bored and begin complaining about the running costs etc....

So im thinking maybe the best of both worlds a DMS'd 535d? Unless someone can convince me otherwise?

Perhaps an older W210 E55 might start to hold its price but are you sure any modern E55 is holding any sort of price??

Our neighbour had a new 535d estate and it was nothing but trouble. Within 10 months he finally admitted defeat and traded it in for a new X5. I have no idea how reliable other vehicles with the same engine might be, but his experience has completely turned me off of this power unit! Yes it is just one example, but the thing was never here.

Hi John, what I really meant was the hit on the cars price over 2 years vs the E500's of a similar price over 2 years would be better in the E55's favour.

My finance company have offered me a guaranteed balloon of £13.6k after 2 years on an 04 E55k 60K miles 1 company owner car which I could buy for £18,750 so its not too bad payments are around £300 pm

The 535d i could get on a similar deal but according to the finance company the value the car less than the E55 in 2 years time (£12.340).

Not really heard much on the forums on issues with the 535d so this is maybe something i will investigate further...but i do know of another person who traded their 535d m sport for a new X5 so that must say something for the new BM 4x4?

With the price of diesel and claims of sub 30mpg from 535d engines it won't be cheap to run in terms of fuel. Cheaper than an E55. An E500 will still be faster, nicer to hear etc than a 535d, plus its a higher NCAP. I wouldn't rule it out. Or just opt for the E55 and enjoy one of the fastests cars on the road...

 :D :D I see a pattern hear!!
I think with my neighbour there were continual problems with its multi stage turbo's???

I'm a huge fan of the E55AMG so I'm very biasand if you can get a deal you are happy with, then go for it!! :D

Oh, forgot to mention, I'm no fan of 'primer' coloured cars   (that really makes me popular!;)

true true...but E55's poor 10-14mpg fuel economy is not really and everyday car now is it...unless someone convinces me otherwise?

Can i really get 20+ MPG from the merc when about town? Somebody please tell me yes and ill sign the line :)

You won't get 20 plus around town from the E55, maybe on a gentle run but town driving, mid teens if your lucky.

Before i say anything, i have no experience with these cars (535d and e55K) but my dad's best mate has the 535d... its torque-happy, and a real blast (for a diesel) to drive. But he questions its reliability... he's already had one of the turbos replaced by BMW, not sure whether that was due to his constantly heavy-foot on the pedal, but he now drives alot more cautiously, which he shouldn't have to! its only got 33k miles on the clock!!!!¬

BMW diesels have a habit of iffy Turbos, on a 1 series forum and X5 forum it was the common place fault with the cars, and between the 1 series and X5 thats every BMW diesel virtually covered.

Rust seems to be the thing over here mind you....

update...

Have a friends 535d for a month while hes away to test this car on an everyday basis.

To my shock this car is getting 18-20mpg around town, i thought it would do better to be honest!

If it helps any, we have a couple of E63 estates as management cars ar work. I have the E500 estate and I have driven both. I have never driven the E55 though and am not sure if the forced induction really damages the fuel economy that badly.
Having said that, my wife has a Jag S Type R (4.2 supercharged) which regularly returns 27mpg on her commute of 30 miles each way. (into central Birmingham)
My E500 averages about 26. I get 33 on a run and about 22 round town.
The works E63 is about 29 on a run and 20ish around town. That said, the only time I have driven it is to collect visiting dignitaries from the airport etc. But if I could afford one.....you betcha. Massive grin factor every time.

What i would say if anyone is looking to buy AMG now is the time to do it....garages cat move these machines for love nor money, 20k fourcourt prices can be chopped to £18k if you go about it the right way.

All ive got to think of now is what happens if it goes wrong?
