The rear door black plastic lock button on my wife's 124 is not dropping when the security button is pressed on the key. A slight push will cause it to drop. It opens correctly once down. How does one get access to the mechanism as it seems likely that it just sticking slightly ?

can anyone kindly give me some advice ?

I have had a similar problem with my 200T. First of all remove the door card and the plastic liner under it. The common problem (in my case) is a leaking air line going to the switch. Check the rubber joning tube to the switch. Also, lift the rear seat and check that the pump lines are all ok. If everything is sound then try a little wd40 or something similar on the shaft coming out of the switch on the door. Hope this helps. Noooooooooooo

I'm not wearing an expert's hat on W124s :)

You covered it really Ian as far as I know - just add the caveat that be careful when taking the door cards off - unlike most cars they dont just pull away from the door - you need to lift them upwards to release the clips. Refitting the cards is easier with two people one to guide the lower section and one to make sure the top clips over the strip at the top of the door.

I had that in my W201 once - it was caused by rubbing :D I just wiggled the plastic pin around a few times, which solved the problem. Try this before you start to dismantle your interior (which isn't exactly hard, but maybe not necessary..).. :)

124 Door button

Thanks for your replies - but please how do you get the door capping off to be able to free the 'cards' ? I can't see any fixing screws or clips. Where do you griop the cards to left them ?

I cant be sure about the saloon but on my coupe, the easiest way is to start at the inner door handle. Take off the surround carefully with a small flat bladed screwdriver and you will see a 10mm bolt remove the bolt and ease the whole handle assembly forwards and then remove the handle and disconnect it from the cable. Then, in the door slam area, you should see a couple of smallish plates held in place by little crosshead screws (on the coupe there is one black plastic plate half way up the door and one chrome one near the top corner). Remove these plates.. Then, remove the triangular cover section around the mirror, just by carefully prising it off. Once done, hold the arm rest and the base of the card and try wiggling the whole card in an upward direction (do not try to pull the card out like normal cars). The resistance will mostly be down to the metal clips along the very upper section of the card that grip the window lip. If its been a while since removal it might require substantial wiggling to remove.

If in doubt, dont force anything, just pop down to your local Helfords and pick up a haynes manual as it has a very good section on the card removal with photo's.

OK, a quick "how to" on removing the rear door cards on a W124
1, wind the window fully down - this makes putting everything back together a lot easier

2, remove the ashtray and unclip it's surround (not entirely neccessary but it makes life easier and it's one less thing to risk damaging)

3, as Spike says remove the trim around the door handle and undo the bolt that's behind it. Disconnect the window switch at the same time

4, remove the surround from the door lock mechanism.

5, get your fingertips under the bottom edge of the door and lift. It may need quite a firm lift to release it but as long as you are lifting upwards there is nothing to damage.

That should free the door card for you.

Reassembly is the reverse procedure but is better done with two people, one to press the door panel against the door and to guide the lower clips on (particularly the one behind the door handle) and the second person to press downwards and guide the top clips in.
