Hi all

I have been reading up on the Bowden cable adjustment and I decided to have a look at the one on my 1990 190 (2.0 ) and noticed that there was a long length of cable going from the front of the adjuster ( could nearly be measured with a ruler ) to the ball.

I adjusted it so that there was little or no gap ,and went for a drive, oh my sweet lord, its like a new car, smoother changes nice acceleration

. The car had previously suffered from clunks on gear shifts ( forward and reverse ) but now they had all but disappeared.

Now having made the adjustment i want to make sure I have not adjusted it too far so I want to confirm from the picture below that the indicated area is where the 1mm gap should be ??

thanks in advance

brendan

My advice is to ignore all instructions and adjust it till it feels right to you

thanks grober and Nick,

grober while the doc gives the location it doesn't give the procedure / picture of how to adjust it to get that 1mm gap but thanks anyway.

I have just adjusted it a to give a little slack and its still great so I'am going to leave well enough alone and just enjoy.

thanks for the advice

In theory there's a small notch on the lower edge the metal lever above the plastic adjuster- one set of instructions mentions lining up the centre groove of the adjuster with the notch above . If you pull gently on the inner cable you will feel a definite resistance point --the secret as you have found is to leave a small amount of play such that the cable is not under tension in the resting position but not so much play as there's much lever movement before the cable starts to move.
ps I quoted a specific PDF but the whole file is useful http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/outside/11832/?requestedDocId=11832
