Great news Jay. Give it a few days and you'll be buying new trim, contemplating resprays etc. Then the search for car no. 9 can begin, to be the real work-horse......W124 estate maybe ;)

Well ive gone and done it... put a deposit on the one above.

As i dont have time to go to Edinburgh he is driving it down to me in a couple of weeks. Cant wait. :bannana: :bannana:

Invite him down to the GTG.......:thumb:

not a bad idea is it?! He is actually coming on the monday but ill see if sunday is doable.

Cheers

Jay

no way... Im thinking of putting the gold W123 up for sale as its ridiculous having all these cars sitting about...

Jay, you put down a deposit to buy without driving it?

Are you getting the private plate as part of the deal??

Hi

I dont usually get into "2.3-16 VS 2.5-16's" which one is better and all that, but I'm going to have to agree with neilrr, stwat and our own biased man crysak on this one, the 2.3-16 is a brute of a car..loves abuse and it will call you a "homo" via the engine note...a bit like the "Monaro" top gear traction control off button..

the 2.3-16 is so good that it still holds 2 FIA distance records since 1983..I was informed that its going to be hard as hell to break these records..probably it wont even be attempted by other manufacturers.

Hi,

Plate not included im afraid..

Yes the guy sounds honest enough and the car seems to have had a thorough going over recently so im not too worried.

He has said that he will refund my deposit if im not happy with the car.. (less travel expenses) so i think thats fair enough...

I just havent got the time to go to edinburgh!

Look what was hogging lanes on the M1 yesterday

Sorry bad pic but had to wait for my wife to get the camera phone out.

A red 2.6 and a silver 2.5.. both lowered with some tasteful mods... Anyone we know?

Probably coming back from the Retro show.

There are no tasteful mods one can make to a 16v without affecting it's value & it's desirability to anyone over the age of 19. Don't you start chavving yours Jay!

no plans at all... all i will be doing is giving it a thorough going over and fixing the couple of bits i know about.

Well it arrived and im happy to say i did buy it..

Lovely car, drives like new... Only noticed a couple of issues to sort... some minor bubbling on arches and a very lumpy tickover... Should keep me out of trouble for a while..

The history file is immense, there are records of EVERYTHING in it... I cant believe the last owner has spent over 18K at Mercedes since the late 90's....
Most of the invoices begin "Vehicle collected from xxx manor, extensive refurbishment of xxx as discussed..." and then after this a list of parts uses there is a four figure amount at the bottom!
All done at MB dealers...

Mad!

Hi Will,

I havent used it much yet... Ive given the car a good tune up which sorted the tickover... the CO was set far too low...
Changed plugs, leads, dizzie cap, rotor arm etc etc...

Then I changed every single dash illumination bulb as over half were dead.. this took much longer than expected as trying to get the instrument cluster out was a battle due to not having enough slack in the speedo cable to undo it..

Also changed the outside temp display and lap timer (cheers neilrr)..
p.s. if anyone out there has a perfect non bled lap timer, let me know..

Also the exhaust was shot so have had a full stainless system fitted...
Then its going to have the rear arches sorted this/next week and then ill take some proper pics...

Enjoying it though... a proper drivers car... this needs no 17" alloys or lowered springs... handles perfectly as is!

The best thing of many good things about a 16v 190E is the chassis.

+1

For relatively little outlay, re-bushing (or replacing) the multi-link rear suspension arms if needed really tightens these cars up. The difference between an average slightly tired car and a crisp, taught one is quite surprising.

Still miss my manual 2.5-16 on occasions, a great driver's car and perfect overall package

Will

Yep, I remember the car and the owner now - Dave. He's a member on the 190 club and also on here I believe.

Has had quite a lot of stuff done at MB, a bit like one of my old 2.5-16s - the previous owner got a bit carried away with a service and walked out with a bill for about four grand.

Most bits and pieces on these cars are reasonably priced and easy enough to work on, they only really suffer from lack of proper maintenance - bulletproof cars in general :)

yes a very straight up guy... I just couldnt believe some of the invoices... MB Edinburgh certainly made some cash from this customer!

Funny you should ask, just been to the body shop:
