Good progress there Jay - I'm sure you know, but might be worth checking it out everywhere else whilst it's in the bodyshop - jacking points, under the rear screen/parcel shelf, inner wings/front arches etc - best to catch it early, bit of waxoyl type protection afterwards might also help slow things down. The bodykit can hide a multitude of sins on these cars.

There was a great guide in the Gazette a few months back by a member from here who's in the MB club - 'ss201' on this forum - Steve - highlighting some of the corrosion traps and areas of concern :)

A lot of those sound familiar :)

How much was the gear knob - I replaced mine a few years ago on the 2.5-16 when they were circa £50 and apparantly they're well over £100 these days?

Should be a really nice example once it's done - look forward to seeing it one day

around £150!

Ill post pics once its back...

Will do you know or a company locally who do the Waxoyl treatment ? Sorry to hijack your post Jay.

Nice progress there jay...

Did you buy the Becker GP from ebay a couple of weeks back for £360?..... If so you beat me to it by a tenner!.... Cant believe how much these are going for nowadays..... Wish id bought like 10 when they were still available brand new...

Hi Peter,

Not specifically for waxoyling type treatment, but I'm sure your bodyshop people or the guy I use would do it if you asked. Probably well worth cleaning all underneath the arches first yourself if you have time - did the CLK55 last summer with hot soapy car shampoo/detergent and some brushes/old sponges/mitts etc and a pressure washer. The amount of dirt that builds up everywhere is surprising.

Had some MB preservative wax stuff put under the arches etc afterwards. Every little helps! :)

Hi Jay, many thanks for providing an update. Hope you don't mind me asking, but what was the cost for replacing the arches (if you have it as a breakdown)?!

Looking forward to the next lot of pics.

Cheers, Justin

Hi,

I havent asked yet but I have a feeling ill need to be sitting down when the bill comes. I just gave them instructions to get the car to my standards.

Let's be seeing the retractable bonnet star please!!

Yes Ive had it on a few weeks and needed a fair few tweeks to get it to work perfectly... when its back ill do a vid...

thats the one... In a way, im glad it was you, as to be honest I thought the guy was shill bidding as I couldnt believe the outcome... I put in a silly bid but expected to pay no more than around £250 at most.
It actually turned up broken and ive sent it away to becker for repair.. The face was broken at the point where it hinges on the main unit. I hope they cover it - If not the seller has said he will refund me... But id rather have the unit working as there is no other head unit that comes close!

The best place to send a Becker unit for repair is to a chap in Hartlepool, he's old school & has been dealing in Becker's for donkey's years.... He may actually be the UK's last offical Becker repair centre..... Let me know if you need me to dig his number out....

Glad its gone to a good home & will put to use in a car thats worthy of it.

I was also suprised at how silly the bidding was, but had a feeling, as they are now N/A it would be big $$$'s.... The porsche boys in particular have a fetish for them & hence sky high prices....

Dee

The unit was under guarantee so its gone to the official becker dealer in Birmingham... So far they have been great so hope they can repair it.

Neil,

He should definently be able to repair/service any of the old stuff, from what iv been told, parts should not be too much of a problem for him as he's in direct contact with the factory back in Germany.....

They do a send off & return service where, you can send it too them & they take a look at it and then tell you the damage.... And then send it back to you afterwards.

Details are as followed:

Putnoe Radio Service
12 Clifton Avenue
Hartlepool
TS26 9QN

Tel:01429 869220

Cheers Dee

I had a near Concourse Almandine red 2.5-16 manual, that I sold about 6 yrs ago. I still ache for that car and regret selling it so much, it was near perfection.

Good luck with yours Jaymanek, a good one is a stunningly rewarding car to own.

No worries Jay - once you've had the bill and gotten up off of the floor, let us know!

Just thought i'd better mention that you should have non resister plugs fitted(H7 and NOT HR7)

Most if not all suppliers now only supply the resister type plugs(with the R in the title) and even try and insist that they are correct fitment(because they can no longer get the non resister type plugs)

After much searching i found that only the MB dealers could supply me with the correct non resister type plugs. They were only about £1.50 each so no hardship there.

Jay, did you just win another Becker????

Your hoarding these, ain'cha?!

I was more sensible with my bidding this time, was hoping as a result everyone else would be more sensible.... Figured it would go for less than the last one due to no box, warranty etc, but it still cracked the 300 mark...
