Hi,
not well up on automatics but basically idles at 1100 rpm in neutral and 900 rpm when in drive and held with footbrake, both when hot or cold, when engaging drive or reverse gives a fair old jolt somewhere i transmission? all couplings seem in order on propshaft so thinking idle speed may need lowering ?

Quoted £25 for a central locking diaphragm from the stealership, was under the impression these could be had for a couple of quid.

any advice appreciated!

I would have expected the idle speed to be 800/900, and slightly less when drive engaged. Needs adjustment.

Deffo idle speed too high. As Brian says 800 rpm is normal.

The diaphragm price is about right.

You may have a problem with your auxillary air device not operating correctly. There are several types depending on the age/model of your 190 car. Its effectively a throttle plate bypass which should shut as the engine warms up. If its faulty or sticky you will be left with a permanently fast idle. There are many other reasons why you might have a fast idle, faulty warmup regulator in early models or faulty electrohydraulic pressure regulator in later ones. Unless you are familiar with the bosch jetronic systems you might be best to take the car to a specialistwho knows these cars. You can check visually yourself that all engine electrical connections are good first . Best done with the aircleaner off.
