Dear All
My R129 wiper is playing up - sometimes it would work fine, sometimes stopping at random points on the screen. Now it does one sweep and parks on the wrong side. I'm trying to locate the relay as it's NOT above the fuse box as in later models. Mine has the old 'bullet' fuses and the large relays are only for hazzards, light control unit and fan control unit.
I've attached what I think I need.
Thanks in advance,

usually solder points breaking can be redone before looking for a replacement do try eurocarparts they may have them

Thanks both, I'll do that.
BUT my immediate problem is finding the bloody thing!!!
It's not above the fuse box with the other relays, not under the bulkhead covers on either side, not beneath the cover under the steering column and not in the passenger footwell.
I've been out there all afternoon looking. At least it's preventing me gardening.

Is yours similar to below?

Same shape fuse box but bullet fuses and no n10 relay, just hazard, light, fan and a couple of the small cube relays.

...as opposed to the one on the link you posted Dec!129b.jpg

Thanks

Cheers - I'm going to get back out there this afternoon, have another search and post back here. Wish me luck!

Further developments - and I don't think they're good ones!

I initially googled part 1298204926 and it came up as 'hazzard light relay'. I have since tried '1298204926 wiper' and it seems it's a hazard/wiper combo relay. Can anyone confirm this? If so, it is indeed the one in the compartment above the fuses as you suggested Dec. It doesn't pull out though as it has a plug and socket connectors to wires underneath, and the wires aren't long enough to be able to pull the relay up far enough to get a decent grip to undo it. Perhaps it needs to be disconnected at it's other end first?

However, I think I'll leave it where it is, as upon removing the wiper and wiper arm, the whole caboodle appears to work fine on all speeds. My new/changed problem is that with the wiper and arm re installed the wiper is hitting the A pillars and clearing the top of the windscreen by an inch or so. A quick google seems to suggest worn or broken teeth in the cam mechanism within the unit, so I'll put a shorter blade on for now and try and source a replacement.

Does anyone have a good windscreen wiper mechanism to fit a 1989 r129 500SL for sale please?! It doesn't matter if the motor is burned out as mine is fine.

We have been barking up the wrong tree then, there are 2 differing versions of the N10 relay with links below, both can usually be repaired.

To stop the wiper blade hitting the side of the windscreen trim, fix a lollypop stick in the sliding part of the mechanism as illustrated below.

Yes Dec - and I'm sorry for being the one leading you to that tree!

Excellent reply, thanks so much for sharing your expertise, and on a weekend too.

Everything is back together now and will have to stay like that until my work commitments allow me the time to strip it down again as the car is kept and worked on outside on the road. I'll post photos of any damage found in the hope it will benefit others.

I'm fortunate enough to have access to other vehicles in the household should it look like rain. My main decision now is to go for the white or milk chocolate Magnum!

Cheers

Steve

There seems to be 3 versions of relay for your car depending on what year you have, anyway that relay will seem impossible to pull out of its socket, this is because of the “grip” of all those pins in there sockets, you have to get a really good strong hold in order to pull it up, that is if it’s the same relay as in post #5 above.

Let us know how it goes.
