My dads got a E320 petrol (1993) - seems there was a problem with the loom and this has damaged the ECU.

Peter Michaels and the main dealer in Bolton both think it needs a new loom and ECU - are there any cheaper options?

Not if the diagnososis is correct, which it probably is.

Try BBA Reman for an ECU repair.

We have another thread running at the moment about ECU repair, have a look.

I'd avoid BBA they are notorious for high prices. It often works out cheaper to buy a new part from a MB dealer in Germany or shop around elsewhere.

hi my merc e220 has had to have the wiring loom replaced but the car is still not running right it has also had the throttle body replaced & temp sensor it is still idling high & surging seems like its running rich

I got my ECU sorted by a company in IOW. I'll dig out the details when I'm back in Blighty this evening

Its up to you, but for 100% reliability go for a new ECU or if you can find a breaker with the correct ECU (there are many different variants depending on the specification of your car) then you should stand to save some money. In terms of repair, my local Indi has stopped getting them repaired as the damage is often deep within the printed circuit boards and a lot of the repair company's only repair the damage they can get to, which is often a short term fix.........again its a bit of a lottery...if the damage was slight when the loom shorted then a repair company might be OK, but if the loom shorted in a big way, they may not get to some of the deep seated damage.

You may find that your ECU is damaged.....if you are able to get the part number then let me know as I have a good ECU for a 220 which I took off my E220 when I scraped it.

I have just broken a E320 estate and have the ecu if its any use. Bolton is about 30 miles from me.

New loom and a used ecu is the way to go.

Looms are a problem area, it might be worth fitting a loom before buying another ecu, in case the original ecu has survived and all the problems are just due to the crumbling loom.

Nods head in agreement

the wiring loom has been remade from scratch by an auto electrician as there is no wiring looms in australia at the moment we have done a scan test & the ecu is coming up as the problem so i think the ecu must of damaged before the loom was made before we buy any more parts for this car im sending the ecu to get repair to make sure the wiring is ok we also had to replace the throttle body as it has its own wiring loom.

Throttle body is a common problem on the 220's...wiring loom less so, but then again you are living in a hotter climate.

May still be worth your while getting the serial number for your 220 ECU as the one I have sitting on my shelf may be the one you need.

Hi I Finally Sort Out My Mercs Problems The Wiring Loom The Auto Electrician Done Is Fine I Repair The Computor & Im Replaced The Regeneration Valve & The Car Is Running Fine Thanks For Your Imformation
