Hi all.

Sorry for the long rant!

I have been a long time Mercedes lover, both my parents have owned many Mercedes and I have finnaly bought my first Mercedes yesterday!

A 2000 E320 CDI Avantgarde - 134k miles on the clock and you would never know it!

Unfortunately, it has a slight problem.

When I test drove it, no problems, lots of power, bit of smoke, but normal for a diesel I assume?

I have a problem whereas most of time there will be no power and LOTS of BLACK smoke on heavy acceleration (smoke only above 3k ) During this time I dont THINK I hear the turbo whistle but I could be wrong.

Then, out of knowhere, the power will come back, smoke will reduce and everything will be normal again. This I have noticed only when I sit in traffic for a long time, it soon returns to the low power situtation again.

I read another post on here and that user had the same problem but it was a 220 cdi and was a boot actuator valve.

Any ideas?

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Also, might be worth mentioning.

While out driving today, I had a "Warning, OIL level too high!" message, When I stopped I checked the oil and its at the top of the dipstick.

Its my undestanding that these engines are overfilled quite frequently?

Would this cause the performance issue?

Who serviced the car last? The are responsible. I would take it straight back and explain whats happening with the car and the problems the car has been causing you. And mention the oil level message as well. This may also explain the excessive back smoke you mention the car is making.

It sounds like the inlet port shut off is broken. A star test will pick this fault up.

The car was last serviced by a mercedes dealership.

As it was a private sale I will give him a call.

The excess oil warning is not necessarily going to lead to a problem. I've had that with no ill effects. As said get it on a Star...no guessing required then.

Very!

However, it MAY also be the Mass airflow sensor (MAF), which is much cheaper to fix. Star should tell you which.

Theres a MAF senosr in the glovebox, so I know its been replaced recently, correlates with the service history.
I will get it on Star to see if It bring up any errors.

hoping its not an inlet port motor

It should be in the pipe leading to the air filter...hope this isn't the problem:D

Right. Have been to the mechanic that I always use.

Plugged it into the machine and 3 things came up.

1. all 6 glow plugs failed - would explain the glow plug light :)

2. EGR recirc failure - this one is historic and has automatically been cleared.

3. This is the big one, the boost pressure does not seem to rise when the engine is revved.....

I am going to speak to a Mercedes specialist tomorrow to see if I can get some advice.

Any ideas?

also, on the way home today after leaving parked for a couple of hours, the boost returned.

by the time I had returned home it had gone again though.

Any ideas?

Boost pressure regulator can be responsible for this. Its about 71 + VAT for new from Merc and if it its intermittent then you will find foults on boost when you rev over 3000RPM.

When you say "foults on boost" do you mean the ecu will log an error when driving over 3000 rpm?

at the moment, I do not have any boost related errors on the computer.

Hi, I have a similare problem!

But because I am new to mercs, I have just been reading & reading up about it, ANY JOY WITH YOURS?

No it wont drag the light everytime but you will loose power under heavier accelaration. It does happaned that vaccum presure converter is faulty. I belive there are 2. One sits on a side of washer bottle and will have 2 vacuum lines coming out of it.

Just to let everybody know, it was the EGR valve (or manifold blocked with crap) causing a low egr flow and limp home mode ( no turbo)

implementing an EGR shunt resolved the problem! (And no more egr yayy)

glad you got it sorted mate.. you have a lot of happy miles to come

What benefit is from blocking EGR? Will it pas MOT like that?
