Hello wonder if you could help out a newbie. Have a e430 estate and rattle from under car has been diagnosed by local garage as cats gone kaput. Can anyone point me in the direction of cheap replacements? Also could do with a couple of trim parts and wonder if there's a good source of well-priced parts? I hear all sorts of horror stories about these cars and their reliability but I just hope they are untrue as it is a stonking car for the money (mpg excepted!). Thanks in anticipation.

Hi there and welcome.Did you try EUROMERC?

E430 cats on e bay approx £230 per side, thats the pipe and the 2 cats.

Do a search on here because if its the back cat each side thats rattling they can be cut out and the pipe rewelded back up.

Car has 4 cats 2 per bank.

430 113 engine pretty bulletproof, gearbox not to bad if looked after, worst problem by far is the rust again do a google.

I have an E430 - great engine - my cats also rattled and I had various exhaust companies quoting me various prices - some going up over £2,000 to fix them.

In the end I had my local garage weld them up to stop the cats rattling -

-fixed, all for less than £100.

Basically I think they are so over engineered all you need to do is squeeze the pipe a bit to stop them rattling.

Thank you for the info. If I have the cats taken off/bash them with a mallet to stop them rattling; will there be an issue over emissions at my next MoT?

What the garage probably did was to squash the pipe onto the cats to stop them rattling, i wouldnt go hitting then in case you damage the monolith.

If they're rattling it usually indicates that they're breaking down - once that starts it's only going to get worse, and so squishing them will just mask the problem for a short while.

As lynall says bashing them wouldn't be a good idea, as that do could break them down further - or start the process off.

We had the cats replaced on our ML under warranty as it was just about 1 year old when replaced. They looked closely for signs of off-road use, as a whack is enough to break them, and as such provides a way for them to avoid a warranty repair.

Having them whipped out and then performing an emissions test would as per an MOT would tell you whether you can get by without them.

Since the introduction of sleeping police and other such road calming devices , cats have become prone to breakdown.

You should be able to get replacement universal cats fitted for a but less. I had two on the right side installed that are rated for engines up to 6 liters about 3 years ago and have had no issues. It cost me about $300 US including the labor.

Thank you alabbasi, is this a catalyst 'box' that my local garage cuts out the old ones and welds in news replacements? Any issues in having local garage welding keeping your exhaust together?
