Hi guys, just on the look out for a starter motor for my car as detailed in the thread title. does anyone know any reasonably priced place to get one, and know which ones are ok, as well as which ones to avoid? Or is this a part that'd be ok to source off ebay?
Reason i ask is, the price difference is huge. The ones on ebay are about £130. Then eurocarparts also supply ones from £110 (for an RTX starter), to £130, or £140 (for a Lucas starter), and then they have a Bosch one for £260!

Im not really willing to spend £260 on a starter, but dont want to end up with a starter that's gona give up within a few months.

Thanks,
Baz.

hi i would recommend the bosch starter as its all we used to fit and didnt have any come back, i have fitted lucas to my c220 and dont seem to give any problems has lasted 2 years so far

Have a look in your local Yellow Pages for an auto electrical specialist - preferably a Bosch service centre .

They will be able to repair your existing starter motor for a fraction of the replacement cost . The most common fault is worn out brushes , if you are handy , you can do the job yourself for a few pounds .

On replacement costs - these things are usually supplied on an exchange basis - if you don't hand in your old unit at the time of purchase , you will pay a surcharge , which can be refunded when you hand the old one back . Some people quote prices including the surcharge , others keep it as a 'hidden cost' until you arrive at the counter without one to hand back .

Don't overlook your local breakers yard - a secondhand unit will have no warranty ( beyond possibly DOA ) but will be a much cheaper alternative - any 280 or 320 engined car ought to have the same starter , being basically the same engine .

thanks for that guys. wil look into repairing the old one, but prefer a new one, if i get round to replacing it....thing is, someone's given a new theory as to wat's rong, so im gona simply get olly at pcs to have a look. although the problem's not come back in a while...touch wood..but at least i know all my best options now.
thanks again
baz

Do bear in mind that most of the 'new' ones you will buy ( even from Mercedes ) are not brand new unused ones but units which have been taken back in exchange from someone else and reconditioned - that is why they will want YOUR old unit back or ask you to pay a hefty surcharge .

A PROPERLY reconditioned unit really is as good as a new one .

thanks...and i know what you're saying...shame though... i knew a guy who could have done it for me, in a few quid (ive not done it before) but he was my ex's cousin.lol
I'll look into a diy for it anyway. Im not too bad at this kinda stuff, n it shud still save me money, i guess.

If it is just the brushes , you'll save a packet .

Last year I did the alternator brushes on my 190 - cost to me : £1.50

Starter brushes are not going to be any more .

If the commutator needs machined or something more needs done , it may be better putting it into a shop to be fixed , but still much cheaper than replacing .

Will check it out soon as i can then. thanks :thumb:
