Hi guys, just upgraded my car this morning to e320.

It has factory command satnav and the dealer didnt show me the satnav working, so before i left I asked him to test it for me.

He said it had no disc in the navigation drive in the boot. But went and got a brand new disc and gave it to me.

This was sealed in box and says on front of it:
Europe - navigation dvd command aps 2007/2008 -Mercedes Benz
Turning over the case the dvd came in I can see on the back states:
compatible with E class 03/02 (mine is 03)
Actually heres the exact one on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-MERCE...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19d6b501d6

When i first put this disc into the boot drive. The screen displayed reading disc for about 10-15mins (we assumed it was upgrading) then displayed No disc.

When the delaer seen this he went and got another disc which says on it:
Tele Atlas - Great Britain 2003 DX M7 - Navigation CD (compativble with Blaupunkt TravelPilot DX)

I've tried both discs in the boot drive multiple times. And not even a reading disc is displayed anymore. Just constant No Disc on the display.
The drive itself is turning, I can see the light on the drive in boot and hear it turning.

Any help DEEPLY appreciated on how to fix this.

You may need a firmware update. Search "comand firmware update" on here as there are plenty of threads

I have the exact same issue start yesterday, had not used the car for a while and when I got in I had the same message and I know the disc is fine and has worked for over a year. I tried my old disc and got the same message so called the guys at Comand online.

They told me it is likely to be

A) Dirt in the Nav Drive / on the lens
B) Failed Nav Drive

The suggested using a DVD lens cleaner disc and if that does not work its a BIG bill time!

The dealer should get it repaired or replaced as brand new the drive units are £3k from MB dealers.

Ok, lets try and sort this togeather:)

Just tried that still same:(
I dont bleive the drive in broken. When I put in the new europe DVD, the screen did say reading disc for about 15mins.

Im thinking to try and update the firmware?
How i find out my current firmware? Sequence of buttons or something?

Now regards downloaidng the correct firmware, gudiance on selection would be helpful:

Daimler AG - Service & Parts net

I have a 2003 E320 CDI AV, not sure which firmware i should be flashing. Is is a W211, W203, W171??

That is comand updates not NAV Drive firmware, it could be that the discs they gave you were copies rather than originals which could be the problem. I can only pass on what I heard Friday as soon as i told them the symptoms they said sounds like your drive has gone!

I have just tried to clean mine and its no better.

Why dont you give the guys at comand online a call on Monday they are very helpful.

Well have just updated using firmware COMAND service update – (W 211 589 13 22 00) for model series 211

went well, and rebooted itself.

No difference, satnav still not working :(

I know the drive works, can hear it turning and reading the disc, its more likely the disc isnt correct.

Also the 2003 e320 AV model of satnav drive do they take dvd? As the one the dealer gave me was DVD..or will it just handle CD?

It is a DVD not CD, I can also hear my drive whirring and it also says initialising and then insert DVD!

Zeusy,

There are (at least) 3 parts of your system
a) Colour display up front
b) Nav processor in Boot
c) Audio-gateway (hidden away in boot, this is the amp.tuner/etc)

a) the firmware is updated with a firmware update disk put in the head unit. The firmware update will give you the MY2007 features, which include the ability to show the Estimated Time of Arrival on the map screen whilst navigating. If you are using a burned disk for this then make sure the drive head is clean first.
b) the firmware update is on the map disk, along with the map.
c) has to be updated with Star diagnosis. The last update was 2006 which fixed a problem with traffic info shown on the wrong side of the road in R.H.D countries like UK.

The current map disk for your car is 2012/2013, so cheeky of dealer to give you a 2006/2008 disk which has 6 year out of date mapping. I would be telling him off just for that.

The firmware update on the map takes about 2 minutes. So if it took 15 mins and gave up, then the navigation drive is having trouble reading the disk. This is caused by dirty laser (use a DVD cleaning disk to start with), or a knackered drive.

Your car is a 2003 and it really wouldn't surprise me if it had never been cleaned, or to be honest has died - its had 9 years of being shaken around and getting hot and cold. We're seeing noticeably more nav drive failures than last year in older cars (replaced one this morning). They are also very close to the vent behind the bumper, so external air is drawn around that area when you shut doors, and jet-washes can be disasterous.

New Nav Processor from Merc is about £3K, Don't do that, my colleagues at Welcome to www.comand.co.uk can get genuine new ones and install them at much more sensible prices - but you will need a new map disk too, as the firmware on a new nav drive will be newer than the firmware on your 07/08 map disk and you can't go backwards in versions.

This is another reason not to use a copied map disk - if there is a read error whilst updating the firmware you can write-off the navigation processor, also they get much hotter (i.e reduced life) with copied disks than originals (DVD-R reflect light less well than pressed DVDs, so laser on stronger / longer). Remember factory-fit car electronics is all about reducing power consumption to reduce heat output, last longer, and also improve fuel economy (even for tiny tiny improvements, because there are lots and lots of electronic control units in your car).

Then the question is why wont the following disc work?

Europe - navigation dvd command aps 2007/2008 -Mercedes Benz

heads hurts and quickly loosing the excitement of buying my car as sat nav aint work..ill throw my toys out of pram in a moment:(

I think you have the wrong disc. The one with the drive in the boot is different to the one that is just for the head unit. The link you posted does not I believe work in the boot drive. Have a look at Mercedes Comand Navigation and Audio Specialists. They have the latest disc listed for your car at £150. I would ask the dealer for the right one first.

There is one thought - the drive could have had a newer map disk in it before the last owner sold it, and thus by using a older map disk it may just not understand it.

The W211 589 13 22 00 which you put in the Comand's DVD slot just updates the COMAND and not the navigation processor. At least you can now have ETA displayed all the time whilst navigating

You have bought a car from a motor trader - take it back and tell him to fix it, and feel free to do toy throwing!! He sold you it with working Satnav. Sale of Goods act applies. (should be said, that all the motor traders I know, at the end of the day, will happily fix issues - its part of the business of selling cars that aren't brand new - i.e not brand new so they break).

Ps, I hope it is not that one, as that one is for not for the E class But as the one you have say it is for an E class, then it is the correct one. Part number should start A211 xxx xx xx

Richard
Sorry same dvd, but mine is for E class says on back of it.

Now, you said that if the previous owner had NEWER navigation dvd in the system then iut wont read older dvd Im guessing this is the problem.

So it see if THAT is the case, Ill try and download a copy of the 2012/2013 dvd for the e model and burnt it.

If it works, then i know that what it is and just order orginal dvd from connect guys.... good plan or?

My guess is
a) either last owner had bought a new DVD and decided to remove it and sell it on eBay to get some extra ££ back
b) It is broken and thus last owner removed DVD and said nothing

I hope for you it is (a)

Read my post about why not to use copied DVD. 1st time it is put in a firmware update happens and if that breaks the nav drive will be bricked.

Go to your car dealer and tell him to sort it. Tell them a specialist has told you that its either going to need a new disk (not the 6 year old one he gave you) or the drive is knackered (or at best needs a proper clean). The cheapest way of finding out is try a new disk.

If for some reason you really don't want to go see the car dealer, if you are near M3 J3 go see Alfie at comand.co.uk (but just call up first and check he has a disk in stock).

Or if not, go to your local MB dealer, tell him you'll buy the new disk if he can show you it working !!

Yes it doesnt matter what car it is from all Comand NTG1 use the same disc i.e. Comand APS Map DVD Europe 2012/2013 (V13.0) for E (W211), CLS, SLK (R171), SL (R230), Maybach, S/CL (W220/W215) :: Mercedes Navigation Disks :: Mercedes SatNav/COMAND :: Comand Online Ltd NTG1 is fitted to multiple models.

Question all i know is the dvd is for ntg1.
If its not for the e-class, and i used it will it destroy anything?
Or will it see its not for this model?

ok, just got a one for all cd lens cleaner CD and cloth from tescos £9.99
shall put that in a few times and see if it can read the dvds:-/
