Hi all,

My dad has a facelift W211 220 CDi Avantgarde Automatic Saloon.

He's been looking at the dash and monitoring the MPG lately and he seems to get about 25/26MPG, this is all town driving mind you.

Does this seem low or about right as it is quite a heavy car to lug around and being an Automatic?

The car has no fault codes, it was just fully serviced yesterday with all filters replaced and the EGR valve removed and cleaned (not that it was too bad), it's also just had a Terraclean done to it too.

I think it is about right myself but just wanted to make sure on here and to see if we have written off all possible factors yet :)

In my honest opinion 25/26 mpg is not excellent for a 220CDI. My dad's W211 280CDI (3.0 L) gets around 23-24 mpg in town and we expected atleast 27+mpg from this car, so a 220CDI should be surely doing more??? Others may say 26mpg in a 220CDI is okay but I certainly would not be satisfied with that.

Maybe taking the car for a good run on the motorway sometimes or using premium diesel fuel may help improve fuel economy but none of that didn't significantly improvr thr fuel economy in my dad's CDI...

Other opinion guys...

I have a 2007 E320 cdi and I generally get 26+mpg going to work and back..
Going to work is worse as the traffic is much heavier in the morning..
My average speed is usually 14mph, so lots of stop start rush hour traffic.
On a run I usually get 40+mpg and if I REALLY try then around 46mpg

I have E320 CDI 2003
Generally I see 35 mpg on On-Board computer, this mainly town driving.
On long runs see 45+ mpg
I used to fill my 2009 Passat 2.0 TDI with £30 per week to get me to work and back, TBH it costing me same on my E320 CDI. Very happy with MPG.

I would say thats low i can get around 27-30mpg around town and around 45mpg on a steady run and even upto 50+mpg if i drive really slow

A tad low, but then how many stop/ starts and what speed is he using driving at, you say all or mostly town driving which is pretty average for this car I believe, take it on a decent long run and then see what the mpg returns which should be 40-50 mpg.

Town driving is as variable as a piece of string. It's a big heavy car with an auto box: acceleration will drink fuel, and you'll get 0mpg whilst stationary and idling.

If you want to know if anything is wrong, you need to take it for a long motorway run. Getting an indicated 40mpg is trivial even in my estate, 45mpg is easy if you stick to 70mph and drive steadily. My record over a significant journey is 61mpg indicated, sticking with the HGVs in lane 1, but that was trying really hard.

We've just got back from a holiday in Devon. Towing a folding caravan thingy (Conway) over 180 miles with the limiter set to 60mph, the car returned 34mpg.

I agree, Town Driving will not return a good mpg, I get about 45-50 mpg on a decent journey from my e320cdi which is pretty good averaging 65-70mph on the M27 motorway from Bournemouth to Southampton.

Is the car getting to 90ºc?

If it is not it is will be over fuelling, plus your DPF will be getting more and more blocked which also affects MPG.

Having said that 26mpg isn't too bad for purely round town.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies

This figure is pretty much for pure town driving and quite a few stop/starts for the engine, average of 4 stop/starts going from nipping around town to shops etc.

Having been in the car today with my dad I do suspect the thermostat is a bit slow to warm up as it does take a long while to reach to 90 degree's engine temp.

Done a bit of a drive today of 18 miles getting out of town to another town averaging 29MPH it yielded 39MPG when stopped, the route is A-road with a few undulations so I guess this isn't too bad.

Will see what it does when it goes on a real long motorway run, for the record the car has no DPF and it's always run since our ownership on branded fuel (Shell, Esso, BP etc).

The engine pulls real nicely though and having driven it myself it takes off fairly rapidly for such a big car!

I get 32mpg around town in my 53 270CDi with 148,000 on the clock. This is a fairly recent improvement as I got an extra 4-5mpg by replacing the thermostat and using the car in 'C' mode. My average journey is a series of 3 mile hops with 1/2 hour between them. (I'm a visiting GP) I think the improvement is due to the engine running hotter and not having to reheat after each stop.

On a run I get 40mpg, it is possible to get nearly 50mpg as well but it's so boring I wouldn't recommend it.

The mpg is pretty well on the ball for just around town driving, the thermostat on mine does take about 4 miles to reach temperature which is normal and the longer journey drive on a diesel will produce more mpg, I have seen a return of over 50 mpg on a 100 mile journey at a constant steady speed.
Hope this helps

Since replacing thermostat, i seen at least 5 mpg increase on my e320cdi.
I had few diesel cars in past, but this is first car, when heating turned on from cold, I can feel warm air blowing straight away.
Also weather being warm, helps a lot. Car sat on 38.7 mpg around town driving, with a lot stop stars, average speed recorded 17 mph.
I am so impressed with 320 engine

These engines do seem to take a long time to warm up but the main thing is that when warm it should be at the correct temperature. You could also try some injector cleaner since it may improve mpg etc... I used Liqui Moly injector cleaner and within minutes the car felt much smoother and quieter in the cabin and around 2-3mpg increase was achieved.

15 minutes or 15 miles is when my E320 got to temp. give or take.
