I have had my C220 estate for a couple of weeks now, but am unable to get anywhere near the fuel economy figures that I have found online. Apparently I am supposed to be able to get an average mpg of 41.5. My driving is done mostly on quiet A roads, and I have driven steadily with the gear selector in C for the last 2 weeks to see what sort of economy I could get. After 2 weeks the trip computer gave me a figure of 36.5mpg which I found shocking. Has anyone got any ideas?? I used to have an 2005 Audi A4 tdi s-line avant, and that would give me 42mpg on the same roads, and I was lead to believe that the Merc would be more fuel efficient?

if your looking at the 'book' figures then forget it. Its very hard to get near the MPG they quote unless your driving like miss daisy. Does your car need a service, tyre pressures ok? and did you have the A/C on these will all make a differance

Your car has a DPF and are renowned for giving low mpg.

Why drive in C mode? That will load the engine more when pulling away from rest.

i would be gutted if i were only getting that from a diesel

It's a common complaint, merc diesels are not as fuel efficient as there Audi / VW diesels
You may get 40+ at steady speed on a good motorway run.

I've fitted a multi map tuning box to mine (same model) and now get 39+ about the town and 51 on long runs

Sorry for the partial hijack.

DM's comment interests me greatly, I have always driven my Mercs in C mode and my current daily hack in D rather than S - same horse different jockey.

So, any experience in better fuel economy in a higher revving gearbox mode? Seems a little counter-intuitive to hold in a higher gear and change down sooner but more than happy to be proved wrong.

My preference for the C type gearbox mode is more about comfort but would sacrifice for better MPG.
