2009 clk broken front coil spring

I like your style, that’s true Macgyver in all its glory. Did that actually work?

Yes, it worked a treat. When I did the other side I attached the hooks directly onto the springs rather than where they are in the photo, this gave me more room to fit the top mount etc.

I take my hat off to your ingenuity and courage, not sure I would have the cojones to do it

I know you already have your springs but just for info concerning Eibach springs . The front springs on My 2006 C55 AMG have the colour code , MB star , MB part number , the legend 'AMG' AND the word Eibach printed on them .

My guess is they are genuine MB made by Eibach ...whaddayathink guy's ?

Eibach obviously make them for Mercedes as the OEM, The problem with buying direct from Eibach or one of their outlets is the colour coding seems to be a Mercedes thing.

I went with Eibach OEM Fittment from Autodoc for the SLK and they seem fine, they have no colour coding. I suspect that when a car gets older, so much is flopping about that a minor difference in spring rating is not noticeable.
Given all that has transpired, I suspect the OP wishes he had handed the whole job over to a garage. It echoes my experience with front struts on a W203.

All done now, I'm trying to keep the car as original as possible. If these genuine springs don't last then I will go aftermarket. At least now I know what's involved and the learning curve is not as steep.

I also notice no one on here has suggested measuring the original spring , wire diameter , height , coils , taper , straight , progressive wound etc etc , This was normal for me when messing about with various motorbikes some time ago (in the days when you could not just click and collect) . It could be argued that getting it right on a performance bike is more critical than on a car.

But I do agree with the OP that it would be nice to be able to ask the people who built the car what springs it left the factory with. And expect an answer.

We are currently discussing this elsewhere on the forum where I point out the only way that I can find out which rubber locating pads are on the top of my rear springs is to remove them and have a look.

There are 4 options , none clear when using the VIN and contacting various MB dealerships on 2 continents. ill let you know in a few weeks time when I start the job in a few weeks time.

It is ridiculous. Petty, even. I've never had this problem with any other marque in any price bracket. For example, my local Lexus dealer were always extremely enthusiastic about keeping older models on the road (IS300, RX400h, GS300, LS400) and would happily supply part numbers and even printed EPC screenshots. Because of this attitude more often than not I'd buy from them.

Just a quick update, springs and struts all fitted back in the car, I am amazed I drove from Scotland to home in Northern Ireland with a broken spring and noticed nothing until I heard the other spring letting go recently

I had no idea I had a broken spring ( no performance issues) until a health check and the following was on the sheet: rear O/F spring is broken 2 yellow 1 white. Naturally I will change both rears but even on a ramp and two of us looking, we could not see an obvious broken spring? What does 2 yellow 1 white mean?

They are the colour marks to get the correct replacement spring to keep the setup the same

Thanks W1ghty, I thought it was something like that, so really I need to get MB to do that after they quoted me £632 for the pair, rymes with clucking bell.

AUTODOC has some good spring info with the coloured dots mentioned , so you may get some help there .
Search on eBay as well , you may see your coloured dots on some springs that says what car model they came from that might add to the search.
It’s time to go detective buddy ! :p

Mercedes Benz Newcastle on eBay, send him your chassis number and he'll know the right spring, I got mine of him, very reasonable price and very helpful.

I think its the very end that breaks, people don't notice.
2 fronts were put on my car by the previous owner, Inspection showed a rear now broken too (hardly surprising really) a new pair incoming.
Did you notice the difference in drive?
