Can anyone help point me in the right direction please?

As of last weekend, I became the proud owner of an SLS. What a fantastic piece of kit! :D

Due to my planned limited usage of the car my intentions are to leave her on a trickle charger / battery tender when she's not in use.

I see from the SLS handbook, there is an after-market option to have a port for plugging a trickle charger in, in the boot. Sadly mine doesn't have this option :(

I do have a decent trickle charger from a previous car I wish to make use of however - I just need to wire it in. Its currently connected directly to the battery but this inconvenient due to the size of my garage. Ideally I need to wire it up in such a way that I can plug in from the boot or drivers side passenger compartment.

What are my options please? I was told that all Mercedes' are fitted with two batteries - one solely used for starting the engine and one solely for the cars electrics. If this is the case, are the two batteries connected in any way or are they two entirely different systems?

Are there any permanent lives or fuse boards in the boot or passenger compartment I can safely tap into?

Many thanks in advance :thumb:

Not all Mercedes are fitted with two batteries, very few models in fact.

Irrespective of that, buy a Ctek charger. Its the same as that offered by MB at half the price. You can get the permanent connection kit and get MB to install it. My dealer fitted it foc when I had a new battery.

Or do it yourself, easy enough! :)

Many thanks for the reply. I already have an excellent charger (better than the Ctek) I wish to install.

I'd rather do it myself than ask my dealer to do it (I'm an engineer by trade). I was just wondering the best place to take a permanent live feed to the battery?

My SL is kept on a maintenance charger, but that's relatively easy as the battery is in the boot. So I just have a short flylead attached to the battery, which comes out from behind a trim panel in the boot. The lead from the charger (a wall-mounted AccuMate) plugs in to that.

That's exactly the set up I currently have and want in the SLS.

They all effectively do the same thing, my horse is 19 hands high, bet yours is 20.

They do indeed all do the same thing and different users either prefer one or the other (and I know theres nothing between them).

I simply prefer the Accumate as thats what my other cars are prepared for ...... and because its better

For an accumate, you can buy the weatherproof eyelet lead as an accessory. Wire this directly to the battery. You could mount this in the boot, but my personal preference would be to mount it externally somewhere suitable but convenient. This way you can trickle charge with the SLS fully locked and alarmed.

Another alternative is to use Anderson 175 connectors with weatherproof caps and again wire directly to the battery and mount externally. This lets you charge and jump start if necessary through the same connector. It's not that difficult to open the bonnet and jump start directly on to the battery, but the Andersons tend to give you more mounting options than the weatherproof accumate leads.

cheers, Steve

My car sits outside, I place the Ctek in the boot connected to the convenience socket and trail the mains lead out through the boot lid to a weather-proof 13amp socket. The boot closes and locks safely around the 2core charger mains lead.

Option 675 - Battery Charger Kit.

Technically the boot left trim panel is different (I assume one has a hole, one doesn't), but its not obvious if the factory wiring is available for it - but its not that difficult to make :-)
