2012 Audi A6

Well, I didn't mean "affordable" compared to Nissan Micra. If we are talking about German cars, then I'm pretty sure options on Audis are, maybe not considerably, but noticeably cheaper compared to MB or BMW.

Strange. I've only heard good things about Audi...Although never had one myself

he had the breaks failm on a newish A6 on a test drive with only 32k on it, which resulted in 4 broken wheels also my friend works for chelmsford police and they had a call from a driver in a audi screeming and crying saying the cars accelerating it self and the breaks dont work..(the toyota syndrome) he crashed into a roundabout and nearly died.. to be honest people put to much stock into the hype surrounding the car and to much stock into the look of the car..audi has a mainstream chav look about them.. aka the ipod look.. i think its just how it is.... drive past braintree collage and all the students drive audis its a image thing it will be some other VW owned make in a few years......

I've got an Audi. Most reliable car I've ever owned. It's now 7 years old, covered 111K miles and is still as solid as the day it was built! No squeaks or rattles and drives perfect.

I have had loads, they used to be a car you buy so you can turn up and not piss anyone off, they are so dull no one takes a second look or forms an opinion.

The V8 S4 was the worst car I have ever owned and the 3.2fsi A6 Quattro avant was one of the best I hate to admit, it did what it is was meant to do and was a fairly nice place to sit all day.

The interior of this new one looks the same as my old one...

Audi don't even see themselves as rivals to BMW and Mercedes, they see their buyers coming from VW and maybe over from Volvo.
They design the cars to drive with a pretty dull but safe feel to them with lots of understeer.
I think that sums them up well really.

I have people at work who are Audi owners, one has a A5 Sportback and another an A4 S-Line. They like to tell me Audi's are better than Merc's. I just laugh it off, can't be bothered with them lol.

We all know the order of the big Germans:

1) Mercedes-Benz
2) BMW
3) Audi
4) VW

Not included Porsche as they are in the Supercar league.

Quite smart Top 4, and I would agree with you, but I think BMW and MB are TOO close to each other to separate them into 1 and 2 ;)

I had a A4 hire car for a couple of weeks, it was a 2 litre tdi 143bhp model, it was a okayish car, nice interior, stunning sound system and a competent motorway cruiser.

Shame it handled like a jelly and that the power didn't kick in until 2000rpm, and it's front wheel drive, sorry but front wheel drive cars should not be considered as a prestige car.

Audi's are really dear, list on a new A6 is more with options than a merc, and definately more than a 5 series. Main dealer cars and prices and the like for like Audi in my search was the dearest.

And £30k for a FWD car.

Nah, A nice Skoda Superb would be better.

Audi is a brand, not a car maker, thats the problem.

I have to say, although a Merc lover. I love Audi's. Just love the subtlety when you know that you have a great engine under the bonnet.

Which engine??
I can only think of one decent Audi engine.

Not really, drinks far too much compared with the competition and extremely heavy compared with the 3.0 BMW, and it is a pretty clattery diesel too for a 6 cylinder.
I had the 3.0tdi while my 3.2 V6 petrol was in having the nav replaced, had it for a week in the end, and on short journeys it was actually worse mpg wise than my petrol, over the course of the week and 700 miles I averaged 33mpg in it, I would get 31mpg from my petrol, it was no where near as refined, felt very nose heavy and once you took into account the 5% premium for diesel the difference was only around 5% saving by going derv, just not worth it.

The 4.2fsi V8 from the RS4 is a peach, but that is the only one I can think of.

I've had many Audi's over the years. Whilst none of them have been exciting, they have all been reliable and a safe bet. Only ever had one with corrosion (unlike MB) and that was due to refitting of clips on a resprayed panel - even then Audi paid half!
Last one I had - 2005 A6 - ex demo and then I had it for about 3 years - didn't miss a beat.

I agree, I have had probably 20 Audis over the last 14 years, never had a problem with any of them either, they do what they are meant to do, just that many owners think they do a whole lot more!! :D

Great cars, well made, just very very dull :(

On another note, I was amazed at my brothers 03 A8 (top spec) still had a flip key, where as my 99 C-Class has a transponder...

Looked at the A6 & XF before getting the MB I liked both, never tried a 5 series as they were too illusive with pricing at my local dealer so figured if they couldn't be bothered then neither could I.

A6 was a nice car but according to the dealer on a lease deal I could put myself in a 2.7tdi Le Mans edition (only 4 cylinders! Boo!!)

XF was a fantastic car to drive but it has bits from the Ford parts bin and I'd have to put more money in to get a good deal.

MB 350CDI, what can I say less money down than the XF no Ford parts anywhere, good build quality and 6 cylinders to boot. :D Sold :bannana:.
Although it sucked last week down the country lanes of Kent, MB no go! So spare wheels with winter tyres ordered.:thumb:

2.7tdi is a 6cyl btw. Your dealer is a moron!! But then so is my Audi dealer.

BMW 5 series is an absolute belter, I would put my 535d as probably the only car you ever really need, it does comfort and sporty like no other.

However, I feel you made the right choice, cause if you want sporty buy something smaller.

I do love the XF though, £27k for a 3 litre auto with leather, bluetooth, xenons and sat nav. It is a cracking price and a bloody good drive too.
