CLS 350 cdi blueffieiency
Hello, I'm new to the forum and have just entered the merc world again by buying a used 2012 CLS 350 cdi blueffieiency amg line with just over 25k miles and a recent oil service. I've loved the styling and drive of this car for.a while so.went for it.
However I'm disappointed with the mpg and wanted some other opinions.... Looking in forums and reviews.real life, forgetting the merc official stats, seem to return about 42mpg combined for this car. However I'm getting around 30-34 combined, and maybe 45 on a longer run. To be honest this is a lot lower than I expected.and economy is part of the reason I went for the diesel.
What are others experience or opinions on this one. Any feedback is appreciated. Other than tyre pressure which is fine I can't think of any causes.there are no errors showing.
Thanks in advance.

As a side note this is with the car set to economy and some very light footed driving, purposely trying to get the mpg into the forties.....

If you can see 45 on a run then you are doing quite well and it's hard to think there could be a fault.

30-34 does seem a bit low if you are trying to drive economically on mixed routes, but maybe only by 10% or so.

How long are those 'combined' runs though? If less than 20 miles then I'd say your getting the norm.

Hi, On the 62 plate 218 cls 350 CDI I had, normal driving returned 37-38 mpg, up to 42 on a long run; so you getting 45 is exceptional

the 65 plate 350d is slightly better due to the 9sp gearbox, 38-89 and 42-44 respectively

i'm not a light footed driver and refuel at wherever's cheapest!

Best Ive seen on my E350 CDi is 48 being painfully light footed. Usually get about 40 on a run and low 30's around town so you are doing about right. They are not great to the gallon when cold but once warm you should get similar to the above

I have the same car and haven't seen anywhere post 40+ as a real life combined figure. I have kept detailed figures since I got my car and have done nearly 50,000 miles since then and overall average is 37, on a long run (north Scotland to visit family in Leicestershire) it's possibly hitting mid 40's but as the on board display is generally fairly optimistic it's hard to be accurate.

Have a look below, it would appear you're not far off what others are getting;

https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/over...tml?fueltype=1&exactmodel=350 cdi&powerunit=2

I would agree though, the published combined figure is 47.1mpg which is outrageously optimistic, I doubt I could get that at a steady 56mph, makes you wonder if MB sub contracted their figures to VAG?

Oil burners aren't as great as what people think on fuel.

I had a 335i BMW and it was pretty similar to the 335d to run. Hence going for the petrol!

How often is the car being driven? I hardly drove mine at first so the mpg was terrible, after using it more regular on long runs with the change to shell v power diesel I've been getting great figures

Thanks everyone for the replies and hope everyone had a good Christmas, glad to see it seems in the norm range (ish). Mostly.runs are 15-30 mins so quite short. I'll keep an.eye out over the next month or so.

Since changing to Shell V Power I have also seen a great improvement in MPG and regularly getting 50 on a run and 45 around town and A roads, well pleased, couldn't believe it was just the fuel grade at first but getting the same results every time I fill her up now

Wow, those figures are close to the merc official published figures and vastly better than what I'm seeing at the moment, next time I fill up I'll use the upgraded diesel and see what the difference is for me.

Bimey those are impressive

Large cars / heavy cars will never provide good mpg around town due to the initial move from stationary which requires power (and below the sweet spot torque benefits of a diesel engine)
It's the weight that kills it and the E class is not a flimsy car

On the open road, weight is much less of a hindernece

40 around town is exceptional

Ps this is why the hybrids like the Prius do well as they use electric to break free from stationary and are the sensible way forward ( not the car obviously, but the technology IMHO)

My morning run to work will see the computer just breach the 40mpg mark when I arrive 20 minutes, and 15 miles, later, and if I have a more spirited drive, will just reach 35mpg. What kills a diesel on the shorter hauls is the cold start, which sees the mpg in the late teens or low 20's.

On a long run, even with Sports mode selected, I can get 44-45 with a steady pedal, yet lose it the moment I see an Audi.

I might go for a long run one day just to see if I can hit 50mpg.

As for economy, while you can fetter the pedal to get the best mpg, always remember that the CLS is a performance car, with the style to suit, and anyone driving a car with a 3 litre diesel will want to feel that power. If you want an economical CLS, you'd need to buy the CLS220.

Anyone buying a CLS is making a lifestyle choice. Some models are more generic, whereas a CLS, E Coupe, SL/K, and the 63's are chosen for the specific style of motoring, such as open top, roadster or pure performance.

If I was looking for an economical Merc, I wouldn't pick a CLS. It would be a generic C Class or E Class.

The trade off in picking a performance CLS is slightly lower fuel economy, so forget what mpg you are getting and just enjoy the ride.

Totally agree with that Fox :bannana:, but have you tried Shell V Power? would be interested to see what you get out of yours using it,

all the best

I filled up with V Power once, but the nearest Shell Garage to me is 17 miles in the wrong direction. If I am on my way to Hunstanton, and have an empty tank, I'll fill up at Kings Lynn. The other nearest station is at Wisbech.

There is nothing near Spalding whatsoever, and I don't want to travel to Lynn or Peterborough just to fill up.

I agree that the CLS is not a car you buy for fuel economy, however the 350 is a middle ground compromise. If I wasn't at all concerned with a "sensible" car I would have opted for the 63. This for me is the best looking 4 door on the market at the moment and should hold some economical benefits. However at the moment I also have a 2004 Mitsi L200 big truck that gets similar mpg to the CLS and I'm curious as to if this is normal, I get about 450 miles to a tank on the same runs.

I have just refilled (with V power at shell to see if there is a difference). I got 435 miles with the computer telling me there were 45 left in the tank so it might have pushed to 500 miles from a full tank, average speed for this was 26 mph and according to the computer it averaged 31.7mpg. One interesting thing was on refiliing the computer told me there was a range of 647 miles, great I thought.... After the 3 mile journey home on mostly 50 mph roads that had reduced to 560 miles.....

I love this car very much, but do find it interesting to see if others would find this the norm. As I have only had the car a month or so, if this isn't I thought it was worth investigating further as the garage still has a responsibility.

I'll post again with regards to the V power diesel, which down here is 10%more expensive than regular.

I get a real 33-34MPG from my CLK270CDi, so I would not expect a V6 3 litre to do any better.

Fuel computer is about 20% not accurate.

Do you still have cls?
I'm from Peterborough and bought mine just over 2 weeks ago, had not much chance to drive of town much, and my average is 28.. Damn, haha
Next time I'll try v power shell, luckily locally to me.

My 2014 (9G) CLS350d SB - did 35.7 mpg average over 14,000 miles - best was about 44mpg. Would do 29mpg on the school run from cold - 10 mile round trip. Generally I was seeing about 42 mpg on a steady M6 / M5 cruise
