I'd actually love to know what we've driven over, there's certainly no industrial chimneys etc near me or my partners work so it's not that.

No mate, like I say very small village. That small it doesn't have a shop & the post office comes round in a van for us. There is a town 1 mile away though.
As for work, there's nothing industrial around. Dvla over the road, Morrisons next door.

Maybe, how long would it take to show? I've washed it a few times & it's only just started to show over the past few days.
I know the car was originally at Sytner Southend. My first thoughts where sea air, but the body shop disagreed

The car is not rusting - the paintwork has been contaminated. You could have driven through something, it could have been at any time and may not have been noticeable at the point of contamination. Get it clay barred, polished and sealed and enjoy your new car.

Korrosol or Iron X. Spray it on, watch it go purple, rinse off. I'd bet my bottom dollar that'll sort it without having to do anything potentially damaging like claying.
