2025 road tax

Apparently, Powered wheelchairs and scooters need to register and display a nil duty disabled tax disc. 🤔
Must sell a lot of disk holders round here then!
Imagine the hassle of attaching a tax disc holder to something then inserting a disc that says ‘I haven’t paid anything’.
Madness.

On the face of there is a big increase for a certain cache of cars. I refer to vehicles registered before 23rd March 2006 but with emissions higher than 225gm.
If you look at Band L for the tax from April 2025 it appears to be going up to £735 for emissions 225-255 grams and Band M to £760 for those over 255 grams.
My 2002 CLK320 falls into this category and it's made me wonder if the old girl will be worth the extra £320 per year.
But, according to Which, the old exemption still applies because these cars are classified as Band K which will rise from £415 to £430 from April 2025.
Hope they are right.

Even if it was an additional £320 per annum it is less than 88p per day 👍

Hardly a big increase percentage wise....and far from the four figures increases that some have incorrectly stated!

There are plenty of cars that will have the RFL increased by four figure sums.

But we on the MB Club forum know this only applies to brand new cars, so don't panic.

VED is an absolute drop in the ocean relative to what most new cars lose in depreciation.

As with any taxation, we’d all prefer it not to affect us personally but let’s be honest - taxing someone who can afford to buy and run a brand new car that is heavy in terms of pollution doesn’t seem unreasonable really?

My only personal opinion is that VED should be based more on usage - ie pay per mile. Would better if the VED was scrapped and averaged out for say the the typical annual mileage - so that those who drive more pay more and those who drive less pay less. But I guess the new car VED rates are more of a new car sales tax in disguise (but based on factors already mentioned!)

An increase in fuel duty and scrapping of VED would be fairer and more proportional with a separate banding for EV's based on mass /efficency for example.

And only first time....many cars have had large first tax fees for years.

But people who drive more already pay more in fuel duty and vat!

Of course, but let’s balance it better and remove the standing charge that is VED - it’s disproportional to usage and makes no sense :)
So what mechanism, going forwards, would you use on vehicles whose fuel isn't taxed heavily by the gov to get money into the coffers? IE, electric.

Pay per mile
So pay per mile and increase fuel prices? Double whammy for ice cars just so you don't pay ved 😡
I have two cars, on one of them it's only £190 ved but I pay approx £4k in fuel duty

I pay around £1.5k in VED on three of mine and that’s before I even turn a wheel - to me it’s madness and none of these are parked on the public road and collectively these three cars do far fewer miles PA than the average motorist and are not used at peak times.

You can only drive one at a time - to me VED makes little sense as it is. Likewise paying on a calendar month basis - that goes back to the old days of paper tax discs given out at the post office - needs to change, the system is automated these days and of course there’s no printed discs that require it to be charged in this way.

Of course I have a vested interest in this but I’d welcome a fairer system based upon usage and emissions - I don’t think it’s reasonable that someone who uses a car say once a week to pick up shopping should pay as much VED as someone driving every day at peak times covering tens of thousands of miles PA or something.

I’m sure it will change in the future though.

Why not sell you cars then and buy some 2013/4 insignia's? You'll pay no ved then on any of them! Unfortunately, if your paying that much for three cars they must be higher polluting and possibly more luxurious than a "normal" car. Can't have it both ways 😔

Yes sure, it’s a choice for me - but the point I was making is VED is charged irrespective of usage and for cars not parked on the street is ill thought out. Regarding pollution - as you note - increased fuel usage (or ideally pay per mile) would target the worst offenders best.

I could SORN them and tax when needed but as you pay VED ‘per calendar month’ it isn’t really practical.

The system needs overhauling these days IMHO.

Not for those of us who are exempt and don’t pay VED .

People with cars aged 40+ and those registered as disabled .

You could buy a 600 , a 300SEL 6.3 , 450SEL 6.9 , Jensen Interceptor or a Silver Shadow and pay zero VED , so you absolutely can have it both ways .

I too live in a area where these 4 wheel scooters are very common,I can see lots of fun if the traffic wardens around here start handing out fines for not having a tax disc, but last week I was waiting for a bus,in Clacton, car in for sevice so used the old bus pass, anyway waiting at the bus stop I saw a guy on a 4 wheel scooter and his wife waiting for a different bus to me,their bus arrived the driver got out to get a coffee and a conversation started between the woman and the driver to the effect she and hubby wanted on the bus ,the driver then said do you have the certificate from First Bus that allows you to get on the bus, this took the wind out of the battleaxe wife, anyway the driver let them on the guy on the scooter rammed the door where the driver sits,my bus turned up so have no idea what happened .
It seems that the bus driver was right First Bus run a course to see if the scooter driver can operate it safely, how many scooter drivers have that certificate
