Hi all,
Last week my car started smelling of diesel, lifted the bonnet and (with the help of a torch) found a wet high pressure pump. I couldn't see it dripping, so drove the car for a few more days.
On the weekend the smell got a lot stronger and upon inspection, i found diesel weeping from the right hand "cap" of the pump.

Having spoken to MB, they don't have any seals for this, which is confirmed by the EPC i have. Have also contacted my local Bosch diesel specialist, their minimum order is £50.

Basically, where else can i get a gasket/seal set for one of these? have also searched the internet with no success!

Has anyone changed one of the seals on one of these before?

On my old 220cdi i had a similiar problem, but just changed the whole pump as i had a spare!

Any input is most welcome.

Hi give peter strong fuel injection service a ring he will have these parts on the shelf ,,just google his name

Ok, thanks. Got the details for a call in the morning.
Any idea if he posts?

Are you sure seals aren't available.

See this post:- link

Thanks for linking to that informative post. Those seals were all that MB could offer me.
My car doesn't have any of the listed symptoms and no leaking from the pipes, that seems to be a much more common problem than how my car is leaking from the side of the pump itself.

I'll probably be changing all those o rings anyway as i'll have to remove the pump itself to change the seals in the pump itself.

Item 25 on the third sheet show a seal repair kit for the high pressure pump.

The part number for pumps from 2001 onwards is A0000780780.

Ah, interesting! Called MB with the part number, they quote £33 something and can't confirm whether it's the correct seal kit or not, but don't have it in stock locally!

Got a kit from a hidden Bosch place, 10 miles down the road in my lunch break. I'm only £15 lighter for it...

Tonight is going to be fun from what they told me :doh:

Fitted the seals ok, refitted the pump, bled the air from the system and she started and ran lovely as before, but tada! no more leaking diesel. Best £15 fix i've ever done!

Next problem...at about the same time as the leaking diesel started the on board computer is telling me the coolant and washer fluid are low...they are both right up. Don't know where to start on this one?

Help

Any chance you could give me any info on the place where you purchased the A0000780780 kit from im having probs finding it here in the USA and got a leak on the top lil head on my injector pump. Maybe i can get them to ship one out to me.

Many thanks

Seems a little extreme to get a small seal kit shipped half way round the world for such a popular and almost current model?

If you really can't find anyone over there, here you go :

Hi, I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 2.7CRD engine which I believe is same as the Mercedes ones? I have a leak from the fuel pump, i can't post pic from work but its from the lid basically, does anyone have any definitive info regarding replacing the seals / gaskets rather than the whole pump? From the link above it's on the 3rd attachment. I know there is a really good Merc specialist in Rushden which is not far from me but not sure if I'm better off speaking to a Bosch Fuel Injection specialist?!

This close to Xmas I could do without an expensive fuel pump replace!!

edit: Somehow managed to post it to the jeep forum so if you look here you will see where i mean

I'm pretty sure they lifted the engine and box straight from the ML and dumped it into the cherokee with only limited changes such as the inlet / exhaust manifolds.

Give your local Bosch specialist a call, they only wanted £100 down here to completely refurb the pump...

Thanks very much, will give that a try

Reply from first agent i contacted, seems pretty fair in terms of options, will go for my mechanic fitting a new seal kit first!.......

There are a few different pumps fitted to this vehicle, a standard seal kit
will cost in the region of £25 plus vat, an exchange pump is in the region
of £275 plus vat, we would require a number from the pump to identify the
exact kit.
We would not replace the seals without carrying out a bench test of the pump
because as a Bosch agent we have to work to certain criteria, leaking of the
seals can be caused by an internal failure of the pump. We would charge a
minimum of one hours time to carry out this check, £65.00 plus vat is our
hourly labour rate. .
We would charge in the region of 4-6 hours time to remove and re-fit the
actual pump, we can give you a definite price on inspection of the vehicle.

To put that into context, i had removed my pump and taken it to them to identify which kit i would need, hence the cheaper price i guess. Still think you should be able to haggle that kit price down though! ;)

4-6 hours to remove the pump!

It takes 1.5 hours tops.

Good point! It took me about 3 hours to remove, fit the seal kit and re-fit the pump, it was my first time and haven't had any further issues with it yet...
