280cdi vs 320cdi

Hi all,

I can't really understand the market for the E280cdi - the difference in running costs is neglibible as MPG and emissions are almost identical to the E320cdi...

Can anyone think of a reason to choose the 280 - other than a lower purchase price (which will in turn mean a lower value come trade-in time).

Apart from this, you've got the same running costs for less power.

Cheers,
Eddie.

I've not had chance to take on long run yet,and can't help putting foot down .Will be happy with 40mpg:)

Although mine isn't an estate - I have averaged from new 39.7 mpg (61k miles).....best on a run (driving like a nun) 50.9 mpg

But usually on a run around 42 mpg

I'm not doubting its a V6, it most definitely is, I was told it was the NEW V6 and its that I'm unsure of.
Don't forget the makers warranty is affected if you chip the car. And some people, like me, would not want it secondhand.

Emissions? VED? Economy? More than enough power for UK roads?

Emissions, VED and economy are all the same 280 to 320. It is effectively the same engine used in a light throttle and low rpm part of the map in the official fuel tests. How much power is required for the British roads is subjective....but the gulf in the purchase price is real!

On the configurator today I get the difference between a 280cdi or a 320cdi to the same Avantgarde spec to be only £2025. Given that you'll get a discount it is not that much extra if you feel you want the extra grunt.

You pay £2,545 for Avantgarde with the 280cdi but only £489 with the 320cdi.

Lots of offers/ free upgrades etc around too which may affect the figures.

Interesting figures - so like for like one is paying £2k for the extra performance... A Brabus D box would be circa £1500 and not affect the warranty (up to 3 yrs and/or 60k miles)...and I daresay the 280 Brabus is faster than the 320...suppose its a case of "you pays your money ...."

But then ..................you could buy the 320 and add a Brabus D box to that....and ignore the above statement.....lol

Yes not much in it. But just worth noting that the Brabus chip does affect the warranty by reducing it from unlimited mileage to a max of 60k miles. Not quite a free lunch!

Also I dare say the 280 + brabus D box is more expensive to insure than a 320....just a guess

Tasty offers at the moment. This from the MB website: -
"Customers ordering the E-Class Saloon this season will receive a complimentary model upgrade. This means you can get the Sport, Elegance or Avantgarde model for the same price as the Classic version.

Leather upholstery and COMAND communications at no extra cost are currently available on the E-Class E 280 CDI Saloon (and E320cdi). These items do not affect your vehicle’s taxable value, making the benefit to you even greater."

No wonder I got a good price on nearly new (6 months old).

I wonder how many new W211s are sat around on various sites unsold.

The offers make the difference between the 280CDi & 320CDi just over £3K. I realise that there's "marketing" at work here, but that seems a lot for zero cost to MB?

Not sure about unsold stock though (at least in the UK) - presumeably they're having to build these special versions and they won't want to do that if there's lots of unsold lesser equipped models kicking around. MB did offer some astonishing lease deals into the trade a month or two ago so maybe that got rid of surplus cars?

Hello mate,
Both models have the same V6 3000 Common-rail Diesel engine in different states of tune. Chassis and body are the same and comparable specs are available on either. I bought a 280 CDI about a year ago. I chose it over the 320 as the 20 or so BHP gain on the 320 wasn't an issue for me. The fuel consumption on the lower state of tune 280 engine was the main reason to buy. (and it was the model and spec I wanted) With hindsight and further reasearch, it seems that the 320's fuel economy is little, if any, worse than the 280's. Therefore I would suggest that if the extra BHP is an issue, go for the 320. If not, the 280 is a great model. Frugal, plenty of grunt and swift enough. The 320 engine is also available in CLS model but not the 280.

That is a useful piece of advice. I have also had lots of insurance problems with my chgipped 220cdi and I suspect the Brabus upgrade to the 280 will be lots more expensive to insure than the 320.
