I've not had chance to take on long run yet,and can't help putting foot down .Will be happy with 40mpgUsed to get up to 45 MPG from mine on a long run. Thought that was quite tbh. Not the best around town though.

Hi all,
Can anyone think of a reason to choose the 280 - other than a lower purchase price
Cheers,
Eddie.

Don't forget the makers warranty is affected if you chip the car. And some people, like me, would not want it secondhand.I'm not doubting its a V6, it most definitely is, I was told it was the NEW V6 and its that I'm unsure of.
Emissions? VED? Economy? More than enough power for UK roads? There's a clue there somewhere!

On the configurator today I get the difference between a 280cdi or a 320cdi to the same Avantgarde spec to be only £2025. Given that you'll get a discount it is not that much extra if you feel you want the extra grunt.Emissions, VED and economy are all the same 280 to 320. It is effectively the same engine used in a light throttle and low rpm part of the map in the official fuel tests. How much power is required for the British roads is subjective....but the gulf in the purchase price is real!

You pay £2,545 for Avantgarde with the 280cdi but only £489 with the 320cdi.
Lots of offers/ free upgrades etc around too which may affect the figures.
Yes not much in it. But just worth noting that the Brabus chip does affect the warranty by reducing it from unlimited mileage to a max of 60k miles. Not quite a free lunch!Interesting figures - so like for like one is paying £2k for the extra performance... A Brabus D box would be circa £1500 and not affect the warranty (up to 3 yrs and/or 60k miles)...and I daresay the 280 Brabus is faster than the 320...suppose its a case of "you pays your money ...."

Tasty offers at the moment. This from the MB website: -
"Customers ordering the E-Class Saloon this season will receive a complimentary model upgrade. This means you can get the Sport, Elegance or Avantgarde model for the same price as the Classic version.
Leather upholstery and COMAND communications at no extra cost are currently available on the E-Class E 280 CDI Saloon (and E320cdi). These items do not affect your vehicle’s taxable value, making the benefit to you even greater."
No wonder I got a good price on nearly new (6 months old).
