3 litre 190E

If you're talking about an e220/280/320 don't forget the fuelling/ignition systems are completely different -hence the 300-24valve being "easy" by comparison.

I know that too, but I know this thread is talking about simpler M103 swaps. And my guess of £1000 still stands for that.

But when I get another 190, I'll definitely see if I can get it done for the cost of a donor car plus a day's labour. (I far prefer the W201 to the W124).

2.5 days for an engine swap ? !!!

I have done numerous engine swaps (which involved puttig the removed engine back into the donor car as well) in 8 hours in my back garden ! I would expect a 'fully competent mechanic' with garage/facilities to nail this an hour or two quicker.

An engine swap where no change in wiring or engine mounts is involved is rather straightforward....there really isn't that much to it. And there isn't much to find wrong if the donor car/engine is in full working order.

From decent first hand experience of this, it really is a simple job.

When wiring looms ned to change or new mounts/firewalls engineered, that's when engine swaps take weeks rather than hours.

A gearbox swap (much more to do than an engine swap) is book time of 6 hours. Most Indy's will charge 250+vat for a gearbox swap on most Mercs pre-95.

Engine removal and plug in donor can be done in less time. so £300 top end for the labour.

Anything else is daylight robbery.

Printed for future reference. Hope Jay's estimate is the same as yours when I come back to MBs. ;)

The M103 2.6 to 3.0 is a very easy job. One in one out and an ECU change using the existing loom.

Fitting the 24 valve engine is a total different ball game which includes changing the loom, fuel lines and many more parts. So not as easy as a straight forward swap!!

That's why you don't see many 24 valve 190's about but there are a number of 3.0 12 Valves that I know of and come across them for sale occasionally.

And It's all well and good saying this car seems faster than a 2.3-16v he owns but does it handle as good? No. It has a far inferior chassis compared to the 16v cars. With comfort in mind bushes, higher and softer springs and shocks and much more turns lock to lock in the steering box so is almost certainly a slower car when used in real terms. And that's not even taking the gearbox and diff ratios into account!!

He's about right depending on which car... for an older car like this, I would be happy to go with those prices... A newer engine may take a bit longer but gearbox would be the same.

Hi

Spot on Stu!! those 2 extra cylinders upfront does affect the poise of the W201 chassis. The 3.2 AMG had a fair bit done to the chassis to cope with the heavier mass of the straight six lump (corner weight transfer)
From my expirience, the 3.2AMG is a faster car from stand still and in straight line speed due to the 234lbs/ft torque but looses out to the 16v's in corner speed.

mazza

So start with a 2.3 16v 190? and then what?

No, you need to start with a 6 cylinder (2.6).

Did it not sell via eBay then ? Rob P is in Taunton isn't he?

It had 5 bids, got to £585 and didn't meet reserve. I assume he's listed it elsewhere as it didn't sell.
