How much white smoke are we talking about?

A very excessive rich mixture will give a 'light' coloured smoke sometimes?

it was motd only three weeks ago and passed emissions with flying colours!!

head gasket will not mess up emissions.
that only measures CO, HC and lambda.
If it passed then i doubt if it is a fuel or combustion fault as that will be picked up.
