300sl, heap of ****

was the SL a 107?

The one on Aurotrader in Ascot is a r129 300sl 24.

I think the price may well have put me off.

I know dealers have to make a living, and put a big mark up on ther cars, so what did they pay for it ? 2k - 2.5k or less.

I must agree - I saw the price of it too :o

No-one in their right mind would ever sell a tidy R129 for under £4000. It would set alarm bells ringing before you even picked up the phone!

Nice one.

At least a once over by someone who knows and cares about what they are looking at would avoid the pain of looking at dogs....

A thumbs up would give some confidence that the vehicle is worth travelling to see.

Exactly, that's all it could be. We've seen the odd example in the forum of people asking if there's someone in a particular area who could look over a car to save them travelling.

Greg (BaldGuy) and Bobby Dazzler both did the cursory inspection thing for me on two W209 CLK500s I was considering late last year/earlier this year. Both were very useful in deciding whether to go and view the cars personally. Both PM'd reports were comprehensive and detailed, I would never have bought on the basis of them alone, but if I had of done I certainly would not have been annoyed (with them) if I had subsequently found something wrong with the car.

Just interested to know, what exactly was wrong with it?

For that sort of money, surely you can't expect it to be in A1 condition, especially from a none-specialist?

Said all the above last night without researching the market and looking at the pictures on the sellers website.

Poped into the garage today as was working nr Ascot. OP correct, not a good example. Rust on nsf wheelarch, rear arch lips have been schultz'd and painted. Every panel badly marked. Rear o/s corner of hardtop rust bubble. Front and rear bumpers scratched, rear repainted, poorly. Both front seats in a shocking state.
Shed? I'm not so sure as I never opened it up. It was after all mostly original paintowrk, and although the chips would still be there a good mop over would have improved her 100%. No idea about mechanicals or true history, but it had original number plates and stickers in the windows etc.

IMHO still life in her if mechanicals are ok, certainly needs some serious TLC but for me £2500 maximum, £2000 better.

guys, you wouldnt believe this afternoons' experience with this dealer.

I still believe two things about this car:-

1) it still has potential but needs at least £2.5k (retail) to bring it up to cosmetic standard
2) the dealer will be stuck with it for months and months at that price as its a specialist market, unless he finds a looney tunes to part with the best part of four grand

With this in mind, i dropped him an email explaining basically what i said above and that if he ended up stuck with it due to its lack of tlc i would take it off him as a atrade sale for around the two grand mark, no pressure.

The voicemail i got within about three minutes after the email from David at the dealership (he obviously isnt busy, despite not making any contact attempt when i was at his premises for around 15-20 mins as he sat lounging in his chair) is the most offensive message i have ever heard. I really wish I could get it off the phone and was able to post it here. Seemingly because the car is 100% original (b*ll*cks) it doesnt need any paintwork.

F word 2-3 times, and seemingly I am a stupid amateur c*** (repeated several times)

What recession? Evidently customer service.......has looooong gone.

The world has gone crazy.

Hopefully he will still have it in 2-3 months time. Who will be the stupid **** then eh?

I'll also let him know that we wont be considering nearly-new Alfa's as our fleet vehicles too.......(a load of tosh, but hard to resist)

Unbelievable

i am surprised you received a response to your email, my experience is that dealers either talk face to face or over the phone and not by email, sms etc,

but judging by his reply it was probably a good thing you did it by email :-)

Wow, john im glad i never actually spoke to the guy, must admit he did sound a bit of a **** on the phone, i didnt expect too much due to the price but he made it sound a bargain, good body work, no rips or tears in the seats etc. As for guys looking at cars for other members, i think its a great idea, even if its just to say it looks ok, no comitment just an oppinion, if i had read johns bit before it would have saved me time and money, it dont need to come from an expert and it wouldnt need to be a detailed report, just a yes or no as to weather a car is worth a look. I would certainly go and have a look for anyone interested in a car in the Cambridge area.

looking forward to getting revenge on this fella, not sure how to yet.......

John, I should stick to doing Fascias if I were you! :D

what do you mean ?!?!?

that I antagonise the motor trade???

hardly..... lol
