Listed again, I've seen this car in the flesh at the sec-shop.com in kent where Chas was doing the restoration work. A lot of the usual rot was cut out and properly replaced.

It's a genuine car and if anyone is interested in it you'll get an honest opinion about it from Chas...

I have no connection with this sale or the seller, just happened to have seen the car a couple of times whilst a work in progress...it looked pretty reasonable apart from the usual tinworm (now addressed).

It is a gorgeous car. I posted about it a month or so ago, when it was for sale on PistonHeads.
I guess it's one of those specialist vehicles, that wouldn't interest alot of people - hence it's still for sale.

I like it. I just wish I could have it! :(

I know the wheels are period but again with some larger more modern wheels imho that would look a lot nicer.

The exhausts looks tiny after the sort on your car.

Looks very clean though (very white even the badges...) but white is the new silver :)

Interesting, but a little bit heavy on the eye - me thinks.

Shame it's not other than white.

(BTW - I actually like white cars and have owned a few. White, however, doesn't suit all shapes, IMO)

Nice car. Anyone recall what the PH asking price was? Trying to gauge what ball park he's looking for.

If it was black or another menacing dark colour I'm sure it would sell like hot cakes, but being white (even though white is the new silver!) will limit its appeal sadly, as it looks a lovely car in all other respects.

It was on piston heads at 10K.

I am interested in the car but not at that price...

Any dark colour would have me shooting down the M1 but white is my least favourite colour.

I went to look at it today.

Exterior:
The whole car has had a lick of paint.. However whoever did it saw the AMG colour coding as an excuse for not masking or removing anything.. so every single bit of trim is plastered in paint and there are various runs and blemishes... They didnt even remove the aerial and have painted over various seals, including sunroof!

Saying that the paint is very nice and deep... It looks very fresh from a distance of say 5m away!

Its a shame as in 6 months the joins will peel and crack where it hasnt been applied properly.

Wheels are peeling and need to be colour coded.. someone has refurbed them in the past and decided not to do it the same as Strattons.

The underside is covered in sealant. Apparently this was done when the car was resprayed recently. This is good as it would save me a job but at the same time it simply covers any potential issues.

The work carried out by Chas at SEC shop is perfect.. the boot is perfect in terms of structure and looks brand new.
He also replaced various seals as well as the rear screen complete.

Interior:

Took me back to about 5 years ago when I was looking for my first SEC... Usual cracked dash, usual warped wood trim, usual collapsed seat and generally a bit tired. If I was buying this car, it would go straight to have a retrim.

It is the original AMG interior though..

Boot carpet looks like its seen a few damp days, it would need to be renewed.

History:
None existent.

The only material things that say this car is a genuine Strattons Conversion is two stickers in the windscreen..
I do know the car was converted a long time ago as there are various articles that I have found from mid 90's that have tested this particular car.

It has AMG Bodykit, wheels, suspension, Steering Wheel & Knob, oh and the interior.

The Exhaust is not AMG, infact its a cheap pattern part.

There is no evidence that AMG have touched the engine. The seller stated he has taken off the rocker covers to find AMG cams but of course without getting my hands dirty, there is no way to verify.

So I thought the only way to get an idea if it really does have 272bhp is with a drive...
This was the best bit - I was refused... To say i was a little insulted is an understatement... The seller knows full well my day job and my experience with these cars.
He said he would take me out if I was serious, but only he would drive.

I can understand him being cautious and also not wanting to get the white paintwork dirty... but he has really put me off with his attitude.
I have driven far more powerful and precious cars and am fully insured...
I didnt make a big deal as my heart wasnt in it anyway.

Finally the price. He wants 7K... It would be fair if the interior were better, but with the various jobs that need doing, I would say 5K is a fair price.
I know he wont accept that so I wont be doing business in this instance.

For anyone else who may be interested, I would get it checked out on a ramp before buying.

Cheers

Jay

I can understand him not letting you test drive...he probably looked at your w124 and thought you'll struggle with the power and handling of the SEC....

After driving a w124 like yours you'd find that trying to carry some speed round a bend in the AMG SEC would be like trying to do a handbrake turn in an ocean liner !

:D :D :D

What a shame Jay, last time I saw it was with Chas before it was painted (he was actually doing the boot floor when I saw it) and I know He does such a thorough job (as you've said).

It seems the owner has made a half hearted attempt to refurb and given up halfway through.....at £7,000 you'd need to be pretty handy like Talbir to make it viable and the lack of any history whatsoever isn't very helpful....

Yes he did a vary good job of the boot...
He even went to the trouble of sourcing new foam lining and using genuine grommets etc...
That was probably the best bit of the car!

The seller commented that it took Chas months to do..

I think even if you were handy, the jobs that need doing requires professionals...The wheels, the interior, the paintwork etc...

Im still attracted to it though.. just not at that price!

RE: the engine.

When it was featured in Mercedes Enthusiast, they commented that the car's powerplant had been breathed on by AMG, with a 272bhp upgrade. I haven't a clue what that entailed though. I would guess camshafts and (originally) the exhaust, too
Go on Jay! One more V8 surely won't matter ;)

The AMG treatment on this car would have been a Stage 1 upgrade, which entailed High-lift camshafts which are engraved on the ends 'AMG - 50' and ported/gas-flowed heads. These gave an increase of circa 45-55bhp. The power in an engine is made at the heads so AMG did the essentials to extract that much extra power.

The exhaust, differential and gearbox valve-body upgrade would not be included in the engine upgrade, each of these extras would be extra dollar !

The engine upgrade is easy to tell....if it's got AMG camshafts it will have the AMG 2-valve heads....and they were always with MECHANICAL lifters, not hydraulic lifters as all stock MB M117 heads carried.

Sfunny how the Ebay ad says: "THIS CAR HAS TO BE SEEN AND DRIVEN TO FULLY APPECIATE WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT."
