Hi All,

Noob based in Hertfordshire here, though I have had a number of Mercedes cars over the years....!

I am about to buy a GL500 for £8k with 68k on the clock on 1 former owner - FSH / 07 x164 model. I accept the MPG and the VED.....but am I gonna be in my pocket every week fixing it?!

Looks good, drives good and is fine! I just need a car for 2 years until we can go EV.

Cheers

Maybe Merc specialist inspection as soon as you get it to highlight stuff/problems coming up ?

Are there any good specialists in the north Hertfordshire area - St Albans/Welwyn/Hemel?

i ran a gl320 many years ago with no issues during 1 year ownership. it was 80k when i bought it and drove 14k

If it's 'your thing' then just round it up to £10k with an emergency or preventative fund and enjoy your 2 years in it.

Photos though....;)

Thanks all - my old Ford Galaxy is up for sale with intergalactic mileage on it. It has been one of those cars that was bought in an emergency, but has stood the trials and tribulations of having kids, travelling Europe, being loaded with stuff bound for the tip, the unexpected IKEA purchase has never been an issue and has never ever missed a beat mechanically. I am reluctant to get rid of her, but she is now getting tired and probably needs some investment to keep her working well.

I also figured that I turn 50 this year and always wanted a V8, so, this is my opportunity before we really do have to get an EV. **My company will be doing salary sacrifice for an EV in a few years, so, will wait it out.

I am upset about the Galaxy as it has opened up so much for us as a family and solved so many problems. I am hoping the GL continues this tradition of usefulness, but as I now work remote 100% my mileage is very very low and my wife has a lovely Alfa Romeo Guilietta Cloverleaf as a run around (with 300bhp+).....

I think the GL will simply be a second car when we need one and the mile muncher if we go away.

Sounds like an excellent plan.

Cross fingers that the previous owner has passed it on in good fettle but, generally, these things aren't too difficult to maintain with a steady hand....

I'm guessing you've checked the mot history, which will also show advisories.
Have it checked out as the others say as decent tyres and discs can cost a good deal of dosh.

Also, have you had a car of these measurements as a daily use as paring in car parks especially multistorey can be a nightmare and it won't fir into most bays.

Check everything works as well.

So, I have the car!

All feels solid and has new discs and pads fitted, last service was 300 miles ago. It has indeed sat at a villa France as the service sheet is in French and the car is full of Euro coins! The air suspension seems to operate correctly, sadly I got the ESP alert on the way home, bust suspect a speed sensor - which I am fine with.

Everything else seems fine, the car pulls well and goes through the gears well.

The bad points:

Could do with a full valet
ESP alert
19Mpg and £155 to fill the tank
It is massive.....

I am going to take it to a specialist for a full inspection anyway, so, I budgeted £1k for any unforeseen issue and inspection at the time of deciding to buy.

Congrats.

It was certainly a sad day in the PMP household when our trusty old Family Galaxy sailed off into the sunset to live out it's twilight years carting masses of Eastern European "Ladies" to their appointments 😜

Good god!

I the acronym ‘MPV’ can have a few iterations I guess…

The plan with the GL;
- fixed the clmate dial with a bit of a clean out, will change the switch on the pcb later

- Galaxy goes to We Buy Any Car tomoz - cancel insurance and tax

- Merc Service, inspection and fixes - Do not use unless I need to

- Put the £360 a month I was laying out for the London commute into savings - I am now 100% remote

Ah well - hopefully I can get some big mileage out of it.
