A very widely travelled G wagen

Wow, what a tale !

Mercedes ought to buy the car and the pictures / story for their Museum in return for free parts and servicing until he stops travelling. That seems like a fair deal to me.

Well I'd not seen them and I think that is fantastic, what a guy, what a car! Thank you

Judging by the narrative doesn't seem to have needed many parts, I think the owner would hate the commercialism.

No car goes 800,000 km without needing something even if he did drive like a granny. I'm not suggesting a commercial approach because clearly he doesn't want it (preferring an anonymous vehicle without sponsorship plastered all over it). But, after all is said and done, this is WORTHY of the museum in the same way as the 2.4m km Greek taxi that was exchanged for a brand new car.

These G Wagens are damn expensive to run too.... Mine has a V8 stuffed in it, more suited to the weight of the car and returns 10-15mpg... im guessing he got 20mpg at best on average.

What vehicle capable of such a journey would do better?

The only thing that comes to mind is a Land Rover (Defender) but not sure it would be as comfortable

Of course the current G Class would be incapable of doing the same journey.

The Defender would break down for a pass time if my experience of Land Rovers is anything to go by, they simply don't do high mileages without major problems.

I do love Land Rovers though

Toyota Hi-Lux 2.5 D4D.

When my uncle worked on the roads, he covered 350k with only oil/filter etc changes and nothing else. (obviously brake pads/discs, tyres etc).

That same 4x4 went on to do 600k before (iirc) the engine dropped a valve or conrod, something engine related anyway.

But in 1989 was the hi lux just a pickup, maybe a Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol?

Not sure about a Patrol, but I don't know anyone that has owned a Land Cruiser that hasn't had a mechanically flawless car. Absolutely mind-numbing interiors, but just brilliantly reliable.

The later generation of Toyotas don't seem as reliable from what I've gathered though.

What Top Gear did to that Hi-Lux was nothing compared to the battering my uncles Hi-Lux took, yet it just kept going.
