AUTO EXPRESS VERDICT

the A250 Sport has a fine handling front-wheel-drive chassis, giving confidence on twisty roads. All this means you can fling the A250 AMG Sport around with great confidence, although there is a trade-off over the standard car in terms of comfort, as the ride can get quite bumpy on broken surfaces. But it’s not the last word in hot hatch fun, as the engine lacks character and the dual clutch gearbox isn’t as good as VW’s DSG system. Still, it makes up for this with its desirable badge and cool design – especially so in Engineered by AMG spec. Mercedes A250 Sport review | Auto Express

In the final analysis I guess the question is --Will a hot hatch Mercedes add to the "lustre" of the marque? Look at the archetypal performance saloon of the last 10 years the Subaru Impreza - where are Subaru now? Could backfire literally and metaphorically. :dk:

Subaru are only in trouble because they shifted markets, stopped making performance saloons and started making very bland hatchbacks to appeal to the family type who are not accustomed to looking for a Subaru in the first place.

Mercedes are going to have to really well with this car to beat the M135i in my opinion. I've been shocked how well the M135i is for price, £29995 with quite a few decent extras as standard.

I've read the starting price of the A45 is £36995 and £32995 for the S3.

For those wanting AWD instead of RWD it then goes head to head with the new Audi S3.

I was hoping that it would look a little more AMG and I really thought that it would have been impressive with the 302bhp 3.5 litre V6 instead of a 4 pot, but I think with the AWD and the 3.5 it would have been much too nose heavy.

BMW have really gone for Mercedes and Audi with the M135i, the performance figures are truely amazing and it's pretty easy to tune to 400+bhp as it was with the 1M and previous 135i.

the M135i is certainly no looker, but from the back the A45 is looking a little Korean and generic to me...

Wouldn't the 1M be a closer equivalent and the list price is around £40k?

Oh, I see, it was a "limited edition".
Don't really have a clue about BMWs, their horrible interiors puts me off and their racey back breaking suspension screams grown up boy racer...
I guess the M135i is close in the power department anyway with only a little less at 320hp.

Slightly off topic but why would they call it the 1M? They gave us the M3, M5 and M6 so why not the M1?

Large engines are going out of fashion with many marques seeing the benefit of smaller turbocharged cars. My inlaws have part exchanged their 1.8 C max for a 1.0 Turbo B Max and they have said there is not much difference in power but the economy side of things has been greatly improved.
When test driving my B class I found the 1.5 N/A to be only sightless better in fuel consumption than the 2.0 Turbo I ended up with but with considerably less power.

Um wasn't the M1 a weird '80s wedge shaped supercar ? So number already taken, I suppose.

They could still have given it the name. There have been many manufacturers that have done that...although I cant remember which ones at the moment, lol.

A class AMG?

I am sure that I am not alone when I say that the new A class is a much needed better effort by Mercedes at tapping in to the hot hatch class.

For starters the new A class actually looks good!! lol

Now, I might not be the sort of person to drive a small hatch around town but if Mercedes decide to launch an AMG A class I will be the first to buy!!

Imagine the performance of an AMG coupled with the beauty of the new A class - The Audi RS3, the BMW 1M, the VW R32, Ford RS etc. won't stand a chance in hell!!!

But that begs the question... Are Mercedes actually going to take the plunge?

Almost certainly: New Mercedes A45 AMG Launch Set for 2013 - Mercedes-Benz Blog

Scheduled for launch at the Geneva Auto Show which is just over one month away

They have been doing non stop press release for the last 2 years about the upcoming A Class AMG! You must have been under a rock! :)

So when can you order??? :D

I have been under a rock for the past year or so to be honest... Lol

A new 1M / M2 would destroy the A45.

The A45 is going to find it hard enough to beat the M135i for everything except looks.

I hope the A45 is a good car, but the following things don't stack up for me:

2.0 engine
Haldex 4WD
List price
No LSD (in 1M not M135i)

The N55 BMW engine is sensational.

That said I will give it a go when it arrives, but think its direct competition will be the S3 Sportback and obviously the M135i.

The RS3 and new M2 will be a league above.
